ok so i know how to get an equity card, but if you going to an audition for a reagional theatre, how do you know if the theatre gives out equity cards? do you just get lucky and hope that job is on an equity track, or will the theatre explicitly say on maybe a website or their audition notice that they are giving out an equity card for a specific role?

On the audition post they will usually say. They will usually have a schedule when equity gets seen then non-equity. If the call is "open" then anybody can go. What you want to pay attention to is the contract the theatre has with the unions. Sometimes they will only hire seven equity out of cast of twenty.

Based on the subject I thought you were asking which theatres give out EMC points. Even so, that may be a good place to start if you find it hard to get your card outright by being hired. The Equity website has a page where you can download a PDF listing all the EMC theatres. It usually takes at least a few years to earn enough points to get your card, but many people do it that way.

Equity cards are not given, they are earned. Unless you have been on American Idol. I think you just have to show up at AI auditions and they will give you one.

PEACE.

Always use protection.

That way you're fairly sure not to get ragional warts.

And usually, there's a huge stand outside (picture a lemonade stand built by 10 year olds) that says EQUITY CARDS on it. First come, first serve. $1.00 a card.

Although (I think) the best way to go about getting your Equity card is to earn points, sometimes an actor will be offered Equity status--or have to join Equity in order to do the role--because the theatre has to have a certain number of Equity contracts per their particular agreement with Equity. In other words, in order to meet their "minimum," theatres will sometimes ask a non-union actor to join, or tell them if they want to do the role they HAVE to join.

If you're the best person for the role (in the mind of the creative team, of course) and the show is Equity, you will get your card immediately. In theory, you could walk into any Broadway or other Equity audition off the street and get cast and be an Equity actor overnight. It's just very rare, that's all. But the bottom line is, if somebody wants you for a job, and the job is Equity, you get your card automatically. If you want it, that is. It is possible to do the show but decline membership in the union, but they will still take the same dues out of your check and you don't get the benefits.
