There was a debate in my musical theatre workshop today on how Far from the Home I Love - FIDDLER ON THE ROOF should be interpreted. One person argued that the song should be sung as Hodel was frustrated, especially in the beginning line : "How can I hope to make you understand why I do what I do?"
The other section of the class argued that it should be sung as trying to be sympathetic and trying to ease the news to her father.
What do you think? A mixture of both? If so, please elaborate.
thanks for your help!

The music is quite lyric and legato; playing it as frustrated would be playing against the music. However, that's exactly what Audra McDonald did in 110 IN THE SHADE. Her "Is It Really Me?" had an unrecognizable melody due to all the sobbing and choking she employed to show that she can really act.
I prefer to see a very stoic, centered Hodel in that scene at the station; it shows how much she has grown as a woman.

She is only trying to tenderly explain it to him in a way he might understand and respect. There is no hint of anger or frustration, just a bit of melancholy that she is leaving her town possibly without her father ever understanding her actions and it is her last chance to articulate to him why she has to leave. It's my favorite number in the show.

Is this our personal opinions for discussion's sake, or are you trying to find a "right" answer to take back to the class? 'Cos if it's the latter, then surely it's between Hodel and the director.
