I know this question is very specific but I've always wondered! I know many times people are cast specifically to understudy roles, as well as have an ensemble track and some are cast specifically as standbys.
If somebody is already an understudy how do they get to cover additional parts? Do they have to ask the director or is there a formal process they have to go through?
