Draining Money like crazy.
Can't even afford to pay the Actors on the TONY show.
poor production of a wonderfully written Show.

Posted: 5/19/07 at 1:37amThere is no way that show is gonna be open around Thanksgiving. The grosses have been hovering in the low 40s and it's doing quite poorly. I hope you're able to see it, though; you might be okay in July.

Sadly, it won't last much longer unless they throw a big name in. It'll close by September. And then drek like Tarzan will still be playing.

Posted: 5/19/07 at 2:49amNot sure if it'll be still playing in July. Anytime after the Tonys is fair game for a closing notice.

Posted: 5/19/07 at 3:02amCheck out the grosses. Company played at just above 40% last week and has been playing similar other weeks. Grosses have been between $200,000-300,000. I doubt it's going to hold out much longer. I would expect a closing sometime after the Tonys, maybe in late June or July. Unless Raul wins the Best Actor Tony, maybe the grosses will boost a bit. But I doubt it.

Two factors here: the show was only a modest hit the first time, and didn't consistently sell out. It always alienated the crowd looking for traditional musical comedy fare. The revival wasn't stellar at the Roundabout (to put it mildly), but it reintroduced the show. It isn't everyone's favorite. The die-hards got in the first 3-4 months.
And then there's the Doyle-i-fication. Coming only a season after SWEENEY might be a turn-off to people who would be comfortable with the concept once, but find it cloying twice. Full disclosure: put me in that cateogry. As much as I tried to love it, I wanted to see the fully-played scenes -- I wanted to see a seduction,Robt and April in bed, not two clothed people leaning on a piano. It all became so slick and so minimal, I just missed the glass and steel edge, and yes, Mr. Tunick's sound.
I'm ready for the band to go back in the pit and stay there.

I felt (& still feel) the same way about pit orchestras
Having said that, this is a great revival from someone old enough to have seen the original. His concept works here&it is a very entertaining piece of theater. You should see it for Esparza alone
A Tony win for him & revival should help it in the short term but it will not last long in any event. No wins & the closing notice goes up the next day

I was more indifferent that put off by the production, and liked Raul enormously.
But do Esparza and the revival really have Tony locks? There's speculation everywhere that 110 IN THE SHADE and Cerveris are serious contenders.

110 was great & might pull it out
Not having seen Cerveris I cannot comment

hasn't Company won other awards this season so far?
I bet it isn't an expensive show in the first place, especially since their only really big name is Raul.

The show isn't very expensive to run at all. The actors are playing the instruments, the costumes and set are extremely limited, and they have a cast of mostly unknown performers (minus Esparza and Walsh.)
With the way the grosses are, I'd expect them to hold out until early August (they'll get a small boost from the Tony's.)

Posted: 5/19/07 at 11:46amUnfortunately I don't see the show holding out much longer unless it picks up a Tony. However, I thought the show was very entertaining, and Raul's performance is amazing, well worth going to see the show.

Posted: 5/19/07 at 12:02pmI think somethingwicked meant within the theater community. LuPone and Cerveris aren't known to anyone outside of the theater community, either (you could debate that, I guess, but no one I know knows who they are), and they were the "knowns" in Sweeney Todd.

Posted: 5/19/07 at 1:13pmI was indeed referring to their recognizability strictly within the theatrical community.
