Hey everyone! I was wondering if anyone has seen Jennifer Holliday in the color purple? If so, how was her acting... And singing. I don't think to was the right time or part for her to play shug, so I'm interested in hearing how she was from people who have seen the show. Thank you!

Nothing but good things to say about her voice, but she had no chemistry at all with Cynthia Erivo. I did not find her believable as Shug. Hopefully she just needs some time to settle into the role.

No disrespect to you or Ms Holliday but can never understand the response 'some time to settle into the role'.
Will there be a notice posted to say' Ms Holliday now has the role down pat so we can now start charging full prices as we had to 'reduce' them while she was onstage and still learning the part'.
Get real ! If she is up there-she should be ready to go-if not, don't perform and give a full paying audience a rehearsal performance..
I feel better now.

Everyone settles and grows into a relationship. The longer you play a person, the more you get to know that person. You could watch a seasoned professional like Brian Dennehy play Willy Lohman at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago and see him play the role 15 months later in the same production on Broadway, and I guarantee you will see some growth. If an actor doesn't grow in a role then that actor shouldn't act.

Oh, she looks fine, but green is really her color, with a faux fur color and subtle pattern. ![]()

Totally understand what you are saying, jimmycurry, and agree[to a point], but how do you know what performance you are watching-or when they are 'fully grown'?
I suppose it is up to me, the paying member of the audience to think--that was a great performance.
I often read here-especially re.'Chicago'--that so and so[or the cast] just walked through/disinterested/could have phoned it in, for a particular performance.
If you are not well[bored?] isn't that what stand-bys'/understudies are for?
Just following a thought that really is going nowhere as I somehow know the answer.
It's up to you as an audience member to judge want you see...not what might be. Tiday,an actor might give a great performance, but tomorrow be weak.
