And I'm just saying I don't think that "paying for music was never my routine" is something to brag about. I seriously doubt you'd work for free. Why should you expect other people to?
And fwiw, I know PLENTY of people who are in the as you call it "napster generation" and they STILL pay for their music.
LIVE THAT LESSON!!!!!!

Posted: 8/7/07 at 11:56amI usually buy mine. When I get all excited about a show, I ususally must have it ASAP. If I don't get it at the show, I'll download it from iTunes or something (still paying!)

Posted: 8/7/07 at 12:04pmDear uncageg, so glad you like the Drowsy CD. So sad you did not feel the need to pay for your enjoyment. Especially when new shows have composers, lyricists and writers who are still alive and needing royalties to do things like pay their rent. It's not like the money is going to a faceless estate of a dead artist - not that I'm condoning burning rodgers and hammerstein either.

Posted: 8/7/07 at 12:45pmum, wow, now I feel bad... most of mine are copied from the various library collections in my area... I do buy all cast recording the are new and not available at the library. I do however buy a cast recroding something like twice a month... (or whenever Borders sends me a good cupon...)

When I was in college and poor (paying for a burrito with nickles because I'd already gone through my quarters and dimes), I used to copy music and software.
Now I'm an adult, and I understand that people make their livings writing music and software, so I now purchase what I use.
A friend asked me to burn him the Hairspray soundtrack, and I said he should purchase it to support the creators. I don't know if he did or not, but I did purchase an extra copy, and if he hasn't already gotten it himself, I'll give it to him as a gift tonight. As a friend, he's more than worth a random $10 gift.

I absolutley HATE when friends ask me to burn them a disc with all this different music. It's never Broadway stuff, but I've done it I think twice for a best friend. I usually change subjects when someone asks me to do such things, because it just really irritates me.
In all honesty, I only buy cast albums if I've seen the show and absolutley LOVED the music, or if its a show I know I'm going to want the cast album for because of an actor or such. For instance, when the new Grease revival CD comes out I'm purchasing that. I, too, like to have the inserts and original CDs. But I couldn't find Mary Poppins OLCR at any store I looked at (I don't shop at those over-priced book/music stores) so I ended up copying it from the library.
I purchased a single song off of a site (yes, actually paid for it with a credit card number), and it wouldn't load onto iTunes so I asked someone to send me the exact same song so I could get it onto iTunes.
Anyway, in the end, I buy more CDs than I copy. So that's a good thing =]

Posted: 8/7/07 at 5:48pmI try to buy them all, and I buy a lot of them. I do have quite a few burned copies though, out of print things, really difficult to get things, and let's face it, some shows that just aren't worth paying for. It is the same problem that the mainstream record industry is facing. Sub-par material. I don't really want to pay 20 dollars for 1995 revival cast of company or both versions of the rosie o'donell revival of grease. That being said, maybe I need to hear them for a reference for something. I will burn them. I'm not using it for enjoyment or circulating it. is it right, probably not but it is much more practical. you can't afford to buy EVERYTHING. Sure it's noble to try to support the artist by doing your part to pay for his rent but let's be realistic, you just can't always. Generally if someone gives me a burned copy of something and I use it I will try to buy it. And I think that you should, but like I said... I also have absolutely no problem burning an album for a friend. How else do you spread material around. Some people can't really afford to even buy a couple albums. Does that mean they don't have the right to enjoy this art. If you really believe in this art then you should try to spread new material around. Of course that's idealistic but maybe there is some merit to it.

Posted: 8/7/07 at 5:56pmI buy them all. It pisses me off a little when people who are MUCH better off than I am burn everything. Ugh.
It was awesome. - theaterkid1015

Posted: 8/7/07 at 5:59pmI've either recived them as gifts or have bought them myself. I try to encourage my friends to purchase their own, although I end up burning them a lot of copies.

I do my best to support the field where possible. Sometimes, I get in a mood to hear more of something (i.e. I have a mix CD a friend made with "Stars and Moon" and wanted to hear more "Songs for a New World, but was between paychecks), so I'll borrow it from a friend, but then go out and purchase a copy.
I do buy a lot of my more odd-ball cast albums used, like the "Nine" London Concert, which I have no idea where to get in a physical store. If it's out of print, I obviously can't support, and therefore have several burned CDs from that (like "110 in the Shade" OBC)

I go through long periods of not buying any cast albums. Then I will go on an Amazon spree. My last spree included 110, Chaperone, Wedding singer, Pajama game/ Thou Shalt not, Jane Eyre, London Evita 06', The Likes of Us, Sweeney Todd revival, Company revival, Grey Gardens, Curtains, Aida, and Mamma Mia. The last two were replacement cd's that got broken. I told you I go nuts.
I have copied show's for my nephew, but he's 11 with no money. I did buy him Big River and The Lion King his favorites so he could get all the info with the cd.

I buy all of my CDs, 99% are cast recordings or (to a lesser extent) theatre-related solo albums. A few I bought on itunes, but I like having a real copy with liner notes. In some cases, I got antsy for a new recording and bought it off of itunes because it was not available yet in the stores and I did not want to wait for shipping. In a few of those cases, I rebought the physical cd (pathetic, I know). How many I buy depends on the year. I generally get all the new cast recordings as they appear (except for juke box shows).
I sometimes copy CDs for my little sister who is in college, but never for anyone else.

I buy mine too. I have gotten some at thrift stores, but not many. Ideally I would buy a new one weekly, but that's not happening now.
A friend wanted me to copy my COLOR PURPLE CD for her. Guess what she ended up getting for Christmas . . .
Sales are so marginal for OBCRs, I do think we need to support them. Every CD counts.

Always.
I even buy the albums to shows I probably will never get to see, e.g. "The Woman in White" and "The Pirate Queen".

Posted: 8/9/07 at 5:13amI only copy a CD if it isn't commercially available and I have no other way of getting it. As I have most of the cast albums I'm interested in, it's now just a matter of buying the new ones as they come out. If I can't afford them for whatever reason, I save up and buy them later. I have no idea why other people can't do the same....
