How often do you BUY a cast album
#1How often do you BUY a cast album
Posted: 8/7/07 at 7:14amIn a post here this morning someone was looking for a cast album and repeatedly asked where they could get it for free online, and it got me a bit ruffled. I can't even begin to count the number of times I have been asked my friends to copy a show for them that they just saw and I always tell them the same thing. "Suport the artists and buy the CD". Then they might say "I don't have the money", well save up of it then I reply. It's not trying to not give them things its just that I know how often a cast recording does not make money and it's just inconceivable to me that people really into theatre would not want to buy the CD to show that there is a market for these recordings. So I ask, and be honest, how many cast recordings do you have and how many of thoes have you bought and how many have you gotten as a copy?

How many do I have? I haven't bothered to count.
How many have I bought? All of them, And yes, iTunes counts as buying because I sure as heck pay for the downloads.

I buy all mine too. But I do buy many of them at thrift stores and used cd stores, so I guess that money doesn't go back to the original producers.
I don't copy cds for others, I will buy them for people as gifts.
The only copied Cd I own is Carrie because it was the only way I could own it.

I just bought "Company" the other day and bought "Spring Awakening" in March. It really depends on how much of an impression the show made on me. Otherwise, I take them out of the library and burn them.

I also buy mine. My friend will send me songs if she wants me to check it out, and if i like the songs she sends i go out and purchase the actual album. I enjoy supporting the arts.
I also have too many to count.

Posted: 8/7/07 at 8:34amI rarely buy mine unless it's a show I'm very interested in and I want to own the liner notes. Otherwise I borrow them from the library and copy them.

I'm not a huge collector of cast recordings, but I buy anywhere from 2-5 per year.
Not a lot, I know... but they're "legit."

It's rare I buy a CD before I see the show. I buy a few must-have songs off of iTunes (the most recent - Raul's "Being Alive") and if right after seeing something, I HAVE to have the CD, I go out and get it.
I always ask for them for Christmas, though. That's where most of mine come from, my sheet music, too.
I am probably going to buy a few at the end of the summer, though, as a going back to school treat. Eh!
There are some I could never buy, though because of the crazy prices. "Dessa Rose," "Jerry Springer - The Opera," etc. Don't have that dinero. . .

Posted: 8/7/07 at 10:40amI buy cast albums of almost every show I see (two I haven't bought - Martin Short & Evil Dead), but sometimes it's just impractical to buy cast albums for shows you don't know. If it's something put out by Sh-K-Boom or PS Classics I probably would buy it blind (Amour being a recent example) to support their continued release, but buying, say, Flahooley! when I don't know the production or music and the money will go straight to a faceless corporation is less likely. I'll probably get it out from the library or borrow it from a friend - then if i like it, I'll buy it.

Posted: 8/7/07 at 10:43amI buy one just about as often as they come out. And yes, I BUY each and every one of them. Next time you see a thread clamoring for a show to get recorded and the person going on and on about how they'll just die if it doesn't, find someone who borrows them and burns copies, and smack that person upside the head.

Posted: 8/7/07 at 10:52amI usually buy mine. I have tons and tons of cds. I do have a few burned cds, however. As a college student, sometimes I just can't keep up with them, in addition to buying ones I want from the past. I do try to buy as many as possible, though.

Posted: 8/7/07 at 10:52amI usually buy mine. I do have a few copies (Drowsy, Piazza, Sweeney-revival). I don't buy as many as I used to. I can really enjoy a show but not go out and buy the cast recording. Spelling Bee is one such show. I also did not run out and buy Drowsy Chaperone but a friend that I work with had it and I popped it in and listened to it and it had me on the floor so he told me to take it home and burn it. I do sometimes go and buy CD's I have burned simply because I like to have the booklet and lyrics if they are included. I have started to burn copies of CD's that I have already purchsed that are starting to get worn.

Posted: 8/7/07 at 11:00amI always buy mine. I buy most before I see the show (sometimes a LONG time before.) I'll usually go to Borders and put on the headphones and listen to different albums. If I like what I hear, I'll usually buy it.
#13re: How often do you BUY a cast album
Posted: 8/7/07 at 11:01amI'd say that I buy between 25-30 a year. My most recent purchase was FACE THE MUSIC yesterday.

Also, I think an important question is how often do you buy any CD?
I grew up in the Napster generation, so paying for music was really never in my routine.

act0r ~ I really don't think that's something to be proud of.
I was shocked at my school when I saw ADMINISTRATION showing dvds of movies still in theatres with no dvd released. I raised the issue with our principal and it's now school policy that unless it's in the official dvd packaging and we know it's released (or if it's in a netflix envelope or other rental store packaging) it cannot be shown
While I've shared music with a friend or two on occasion, I don't make a practice of it. I know too many people involved in the music industry in Nashville to ever really feel good about it because I know how little they get anyway (not the names, the little guys). If I burn something for someone, it's usually only because it's impossible to find the CD anymore.

I trade out of print ones, and I only buy from iTunes, or used ones at the local exchange.
But yeah, I'll be honest, if I don't have to buy it, I won't.

I have gotten music from some people, and I try not to make it a habit, but I do try to buy most of my cast albums. Since I don't have much money at my disposal, I can't get too many of them, but I do ask for them at Christmas.
So yes, most of my cast albums were bought.

Posted: 8/7/07 at 11:24amIf I really like something and I want one of my friends to listen to it, I never burn it for them. I tell them: "Go buy it or get it off iTunes." I hate when people on the internet say things like:"I'm DYING to listen to this, please give it to me." or "I need to hear this...." If they love the show and Broadway, it is kind of their duty to go out and purchase it. The same thing goes with movies online and stuff. "I need to see this! AHHHHHH" Go. to. a. movie. theatre. and. see. it.

It's about half and half.
I buy on average a CD every two weeks, if not more often.
Usually the things I buy are new releases and the things I burn are older shows. I'm collect everything I can get my hands on, so that's a reason for a lot of it, especially out-of-print recordings.
Eventually though, again because I'm a collector, I like to have the original, so oftentimes I'll buy something I already have a burned copy of.
A question though: some (but not all) of the items I buy are form used music stores or Amazon Marketplace. None of this money is going to the people that made the CD, so how does that help anymore than burning it? Just a thought...

Posted: 8/7/07 at 11:31amCast recordings are the only kind of music I feel I need to buy complete with case, booklet, etc. Since I can't see shows every weekend, its my way of supporting the art. And yes, I do buy cast albums as they come out. I do shop around for the best prices unless I have this burning desire to buy it as soon as I see it (This was the case with Sweeney Todd 2005 and 110 in the Shade 2007.) But all my in-print cast albums were purchased legit and complete.
