Too often, in light of what I too often find there.
But I guess I just can't stop looking for that wonder of wonders, that terrific rainbow, that little bluebird.
I don't live in NYC, but live in Houston where he the theater scene is pretty active. I used to average 5 or so shows a year, but all that changed when I started reviewing shows for houston.broadwayworld.com. Now, I'm seeing 7+ shows a month.

I live in the city, and at least monthly. Sometimes weekly, like in the spring when there's a lot opening.
I live in the city also. One subway train to Times Square. Sometimes I go 3 times a week to the theater sometimes once a month. I refuse to pay the high prices and wait generally for a deal to happen. Sometimes I'm offered a 7 pm show at 3 pm the same day......I will drop everything if I want to see it.

I LOVE the theater and go several times a week! I LOVE the theater- and everything about it! The little booths, the dark hallway, the sound of quarters going into the slots and everywhere- that smell of men enjoying themselves!

Your quarters reference makes your post seem apocryphal. Though it is true the last place I saw quarter booths was in Chicago, it was in the '90s.

If there's a show I really like I'll go back and see it again and again. I saw GODSPELL over 20 times in the month before it closed.
Long Live God!
I appreciate your question bwayphreak234, as I often wondered the same thing when I lived in DC. I usually go 2-3 times a month, depending on my work schedule, my partner's work schedule etc. I actually love seeing shows by myself, so I don't end up wondering if my friend or guest is enjoying himself/herself. I thought when I lived in DC that I'd be at the TKTS booth every week, but once I got settled in to NYC it turned out not to be as often. If I was single and didn't have 2 dogs that I'm crazy about, I probably would see a lot more shows.
I am lucky to work for a non-profit organization and get to be a member of TDF. This allows me to see a lot more, as $45 dollars per show is a lot more reasonable then even $85.00 when you are living in midtown, paying midtown NYC rent etc. For some shows, my TDF membership allows me to see something many more times than I would have otherwise. Once I fall in love with something, I love sharing it with my friends. It's a lot easier to treat people to a show when the tickets are $45. I ended up seeing Next to Normal 17 times. I was obviously quite moved by the show. On the flip side, there are some shows that I would love to see but don't get to because of having to pay full price.
The only show that I actually watched "evolve" through its previews was Cry-Baby. I think I was the only one...since most people hated it. It is interesting though because some shows that I was just lukewarm to after 1 viewing, I ended up loving and seeing 5-6 times...like JCS, Cry-Baby, and Bonnie and Clyde. The problem is that most audiences only go once, so if it takes 2 viewings to really like something, the show probably has problems. Other shows I see once, and I have no desire to see again...like Ghost, Shrek, End of the Rainbow, and Anything Goes.
Hope this is helpful. See you at the TKTS Booth someday!

Like many, I'm down a handful of times a year but topload the trips with theatre. I usually manage three or four during a two or three-night stay.
As someone who lives in Chicago I don't nessacarily see broadway shows too often. Ive been to the city 5 times and have luckily made it the past 2 years. It's kind of a thing that I get to go now every march and I'm hoping that shall continue. When I go I see usually 4-6 shows pending what I want to se and what else is going on. That said, I live in the city with arguably the best regional theatre scene in the country. And I take full advantage. I usually see 1-3 a month pending I myself am not in a run of a show of my own. It varies pending what's playing or what friends are appearing in what. I think my record has been about 4 or 5 in a month here.

Ah Joe, the dancers when the gates go up! Your money lasts only a short while though.
Old Show World I miss thee.

Living in Oregon it's quite hard to make it out to New York often, but thanks to Portland being high on the Touring market I see about 4-5 shows a year.
I am actually currently on vacation in NYC, and am only seeing one show while I am here, which is Wicked. I will be seeing it on Saturday night @ 8 PM. I also have tickets for Behind the Emerald Curtain that morning. I normally live in Charlotte, NC, and am only about 10 minutes from the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. I always buy the Broadway Lights Series subscription, which is where for a few hundred bucks I get to see about 7 shows on tour there. They last one I saw was Beauty and the Beast NETworks tour, which I saw last Tuesday. With this Broadway Lights Series subscription, I see about 1 show every 2 months.

Not as often as I used to. I live one hour away in NJ, and usually go in by train. Recently, with a new friend we went in by car for a Sunday mat and the trafic was horible, cost $35 to park because I knew I would never make on time to the discount lot at Hippodrome. With the construction at the Lincoln Tunnel it will be years before I go that way again.
Years ago I'd stay a couple of nights at a hotel and see three shows and do other stuff, but the prices have gone up so much it's no longer affordable.
Yes, NY is a hassle, but I'll be back next week for Nice Work.
As for seeing a show multiple times, I've done that a few times, early preview, around opening and other times. Most recently, Anything Goes, and then there's Billy Elliot which I have seen in NY twice, London, Toronto, and the national tour in Tempe, AZ.
I live about an hour and a half to two hours away from NYC, so I normally get to go about once a month. I'm taking my June trip in 10 days to go see Once!

Not as much as I would like to but every chance I get.

If you want to drive you should drive to Exit 15x secaucus junction and take the nj transit from there. It's only 1 stop and takes literally 6 minutes. Parking is usually 7 bucks after 4pm, you just have to check the parkfast website cause it depends what time you go and make sure there aren't any special events.
I live in Staten Island so some days I drive there instead of taking the staten island railroad and then ferry and because the ferrys schedule sucks for anyone who isn't a tourist it's actually quicker for me to drive to 15x.

I live about 2-2.5 hours from nyc, so I typically go once or twice a month. Depends on what shows are playing, sometimes I go more, sometimes less. I usually go on the weekends as the 7/7:30pm shows are harder to make with the train schedules, but sometimes I can finagle my way out of work a bit early for a weekday show.
I grew up in minneapolis, which has a very active theater scene, and with parents who were able to be season ticketholders to different theaters, so my love for the arts was definitely cultivated at an early age. I will never get over how many different broadway, off- and off-off shows there are to choose from in NY. I love it!
Best answer by far, "Not as much as I would like to but every chance I get." Truth!

I get to the theatre about 4 times a month. It varies though. My job isn't accommodating to see shows as much as I would like. But I go every chance I get, provided I have the finances. Good luck on moving to NYC!
I've lived in New York all my life, and thanks to my parents, developed a passion for theatre at an early age. I've been attending theatre performances for 50 years now, pretty much at least once or twice a week, and my passion shows no signs of abating.
Even after the musical dross of this season, I remain every hopeful.
And by the way, do not pass up a chance to see THE COLUMNIST in its final performances this weekend. Very well written, and two sensational turns by John Lithgow and Boyd Gaines.
Well, I've worked in theatre for about 25 years. So I go to the theatre almost every day. As far as actually sitting down to see a show outside of the theatres I've worked in, Usually 2 a month locally (3 hours from NYC), I'll usually train it into NYC once a month for the day to catch a matinee. Of course that depends on if there's anything I want to see at the time. So Some months I haven't gone to NYC, other months I've seen anywhere from 1 to 3 NYC shows in a weekend.
