Bill Condon is doing a movie about PT Barnum. (Is this a screen version of the musical Barnum?) I bet Hugh would rather play Barnum than Houdini.
eta: No I guess it's not a screen version of the Broadway show. IMDB lists Mika as doing the music.

Any reason why? He is probably to only performer that can play (is right) for the role. Very sad to see him leave the show as. Now the question is who has the stage presence to play Houdini?

I think it's just been taking too long - he's been talking about this since at least 2009, and he's been getting great notices for his recent movies and is now Oscar-nominated. Taking a long time off from making movies at this point may not make sense.

With the recent confirmation by a representative of the project to Playbill that the show is being targetted to open on Broadway only for the 2015/2016 season, maybe Hugh made a decision that he cannot wait another 2 years for the show.

Hopefully, this frees him up for other stage options ( dramatic play or even another musical - wasn't Sorkin supposed to be involved in a new one?)) and other major film projects. Maybe even an earlier greenlight for the movie musical project, THE GREATEST SHOWMAN ON EARTH?
