I hope not. If I were to pick a replacement for Hugh Jackman it wouldn't be Rupert Everett.

Posted: 12/10/03 at 1:13pmI agree- his singing is just awful! Have you heard him massacre American Pie with Madonna? He also doesn't fare well with a duet with Robbie Willaims whose title escapes me. He is cute though!

Posted: 12/10/03 at 1:56pmI really don't think anyone could play the part the way Hugh can. Rupert Everett would NOT fit the part. I believe the show will close shortly after Hugh leaves. The only person I've heard of that would make an accpetable replacement would be Harry Connick Jr.

Posted: 12/10/03 at 2:23pmDoes Hugh Jackman actually play Peter Allen? Jackman is a charismatic performer who knows how to work a crowd, but I never once bought him as Peter Allen. I doubt they'll find a replacement when he leaves because THE BOY FROM OZ is not about Peter Allen. It's about paying $100 or more to see Jackman shake his ass.

Posted: 12/10/03 at 2:45pmIsn't it a little early to be discussing a possible replacement for Hugh? The show is only a few months old and isn't he signed on for a year anyway?

They need to think about this ASAP. It is going to take a LONG time to find a suitable replacement. Time flies and sooner rather than later is always the best bet.

Posted: 12/10/03 at 4:17pmI have a feeling the show will shutter after Hugh's exit.

Posted: 12/10/03 at 4:29pmI saw Todd McKenney play Peter Allen in the original Sydney production and - although his vocals do not match Hugh Jackman's - his performance was quite stunning and he was closer to the real Allen. Unfortunately, at a hundred bucks a ticket the producers will probably look for another big star name - but McKenney could really wow the Broadway audiences if he were to be given the chance.

#10re: re: re: re: Hugh's Replacement
Posted: 12/10/03 at 8:31pmHugh Jackman is due to leave the show until Sept 04. As a replacement that is an Australian I'd go with Eric Bana (Balckhawk Down and The Hulk) though not as well known as Hugh, anyone that they get to take over is likely to be a lesser name. He is known in Australia as a comic/actor/singer, alternatively maybe Heath Ledger though he may be a little young.

Posted: 12/11/03 at 5:04pmcmleidi: I'll say this about Jackman, if you close your eyes he sounds JUST like Allen. It's actually kind of eery at times. But, yes, I agree, Peter Allen, as talented & charismatic as he was, was never quite as charismatic or sexy as Jackman. Mostly, everyone in that theatre except the heterosexual men are there to see Hugh's bare chest, etc. If they're also entertained, well so much the better.

Posted: 12/11/03 at 5:28pmthe rumor i heard was Sean Hayes, which makes sense given his piano-playing and singing. He does have a good name from TV, but could only do it in his hiatus. i too think the show will have trouble surviving Jackman's departure.

Posted: 12/11/03 at 10:13pmHeath Ledger can sing.

Posted: 12/12/03 at 12:51amWhat about Neil Patrik Harris? He is boyishly cute, can sing and has, shall we say, a certain "gayness" about him. If ASSASSINS is done with by that time, he should be considered.

Posted: 12/14/03 at 7:24pmAnyone know when his vacation is? It will be very interesting to see how the box office does when he's out. Who's his understudy anyway? I feel sorry for him- big shoes to fill!

A Boy From Oz, WHY must you put that idea in my head????? I've been dying to see my favorite guy on Broadway ever since I discovered him when I was 11 years old...gah...I'd LOVE to see Harry Connick in some show...not sure how I'd feel about him as Peter Allen, though...don't know if he could pull off the accent. He'd look cute in the costumes, though :)
I think Harry would be great as Jimmy in Millie...maybe a little too old (well, he's only a few years older than Christian, I think)...I would LOVE to hear him do "What Do I Need with Love". He'd also be good as Trevor.
Honestly, I can't see anyone else in that role besides Hugh myself. The show really was enjoyable, but he was the driving force.
Deena, Hugh's understudy is an actor from Days of Our Lives...his name escapes me...Michael Something. I recognized him in the playbill. I feel sorry for him, too! I wonder how often he's gone on...I can't imagine people being too happy to see him on stage.
