They threw out the entire set?! That's such a waste. I cannot believe they threw all that money out the window.

All of it....gone. They should have had a garage sale or something. But, in essence, the set was 6 rising towers that had projections on them and there were not so many props. So there was not so much that one could do with them...certainly not put it in storage.

As far as the other elements...including the rights to the orchestrations, who owns the make-up designs, etc...not sure.

If Stella owned the rights to the show, and then went bankrupt (they had other projects, not just theater, but also real estate)...not sure really WHO owns the stage rights now.

Maybe Disney owns some, maybe they own the whole thing....Ach, who knows. Bottom line: the show closed out of town.........................VERY far out of town which was a shame as there were some very nice things about it.

Menken based the new songs from Der Glockner on his score for the movie. The song Rest and Recreation (the first song of Phoebus) is almost exactly what you hear when Phoebus first enters Paris in the movie.

The song Einmal is a better version of the song Someday as performed by Eternal which was the 'hit'single from the film.

The court of Miracles was cut from the score.

The dialogue in the openingsong was replaced with other dialogue.

The song Out there was cut to two separe songs called Zuflucht (Sanctuary) and Draussen (Out there). Draussen stays the same but Zuflucht got additional material in which Frollo tells about how and why he became a priest.

God help the outcast became a duet between Esmeralda and Quasi.

There are some extra verses to Drunter Druber (Topsy Turvy).

The Act I Finale called Esmeralda is one of the most thrilling finales you'll ever hear. All musical themes come together to one big climax which sends shivers down my spine every time.

Personally I really liked the show, it's much more mature than the movie, which was allready very mature for a Disney movie. I think the book isn't the best out there but definately not bad. Frollo is a mad man. Of course he did his duty, not only was he insanely in love with Esmeralda, this man was insane when it comes to his 'God'. Frollo should die at the end, as an audience you only see Frollo making Quasimodo feel miserable, they don't do anything together in which you can relate to the fact that Frollo is good for him. He just makes Quasi think he is. It's clear Quasi loves Esmeralda. When Frollo burnes the city I don't think any citizen of Paris would mind that Frollo gets killed...

I saw a local production here in Holland, performed in a church and I was moved both times I saw the show...

"Eisner didn't can it - it was his passion project. When Disney canned Eisner, Disney canned the Hunchback musical on both TV and stage."

I know, I said Iger canned it. My wording might have been confusing...

With BatB and Mermaid Menken has borrowed many of his incidental music themes from the scores and adapted them to songs--did he do the same for Hunch?

Really, apart from Phoebus' first song "Ein Bisschen Freude" (Rest and Recreation), which as was said earlier uses his musical cue from the film, and "Trommeln In Der Stadt" (City Under Siege), which uses the music in the part when Quasimodo swings down from the bell tower to rescue Esmeralda (among other times), it's mostly all new music.

if this was a live musical, i think it would be pretty intense.
it always kind of scared me a little when i was younger.. especially the Frollo parts, when he is all posessed and demonic in front of that fire and stuff.
but i bet it would be cool if done right, but if it was disney theatricals it might scare kids a bit.

hear my song; it was made for the time when you don't know where to go, listen to the song that i sing, you'll be fine..

I always thought that Hunchback should have been a broaway show in the first place and not an animated disney movie. Now child under ten understands the song Hellfire. HOND was too deep and dark for a kids movie, but for broadway...it was perfect.

I'm a bit dissapointed to hear that the gargoils were taken out, they were so out of place in the movie and were annoying(though glad to hear "guy like you" was cut)

Anyways, HOND would make an awesome show, here's why-

Based on a novel written by the same author who wrote Les Miserables

The Lyrics were written by the same guy who penned and composed the WIcked musical

Scored by Alen Menken who scored Beauty and the Beast

My point is, HOND has contributions and fundamentals from three mega hit and compelling broadway musicals(now, if only Sondheim had contributed too lol) making it have GREAT potential.

The Gargoils were cut in the first draft, but put back in the show because Disney didn't want to loose them. A Guy Like You wasn't cut from the show.

Not sure if the person above me is joking or not, but Alan Menken definitely wrote the music of HOND. Stephen Schwartz only did the lyrics.

I gotta personally agree with Lance2 though, the Act I finale "Esmeralda" is absolutely incredible... the major music theme is very strong and has some reprises through that are meshed together into a very stirring, tense, and yet majestic piece of music.

What would it take for disney to accept the fact that HOND is about as kid friendly as Les Miserables with or without the talking Gargoles?! (They aren't like Sebastian in Little Mermaid)

So A Guy Like You wasn't cut after all? Please tell me the song is during intermisson.

Man oh man how much I despise a Guy Like You. It's almost like the Disney animators for the cartoon version knew the song was WILDLY inappropriate and so just treated it as a joke throwing in as many anchronisms as possible

Thanks BDrish for exp[lainign the music--to be fair I don't mind when Menken has used bits of score form his cartoons as new songs--i was thrilled to hear my fave melody fcromt he incidental music of Mermaid, the scene where she first visits the castle and town--used as a song

Thanks for mentioning the youtube--I never thought to look under the German name--there are even some videos with English subtitles!

Most of the clips are really impresive though man those gargoyles are kinda creepy looking! which of course makes sense but:)

The Guy Like You number did not quite work on stage. In the movie it was this funny (ish), gag number. As it was animation, the people could have fun with it. On stage however, it was kinda....well, boring. Think of it like "Be Our Guest" from Beauty and the Beast.............WITHOUT THE ENSEMBLE. Be Our Guest with just the Clock Guy, The Candle Guy and the Tea Pot Lady. The three of them just singing the song to eachother. That is basically what the staging was in Germany. Does not quite have the impact. In the stage production, Quasi joins in at the end. I dunno how this song could have worked better...maybe making it a big production number, with the ensemble as the other Gargoyles from the Cathedral......I dunno. There were so few light moments in the stage production, this number could have given the audience a little bit of a break from the darkness.

Just keep in mind that Sue Blane (Rocky Horror Show) did the costume desigs and it all makes perfectly sense. re: Hunchback of Notre Dame movie/musical

I remain fascinated by this... Did it get good reviews? (not that I imagine the German theatre press is as hard as New York's)

Also can Schwartz's Gepetto with Drew Carey tv musical be partly to blame for the scraping of the TV version?

EricMontreal22, which new song in the Little Mermaid has the same melody as the "visiting the town" music? I always thought that section of the score was so beautiful.

#73re: Hunchback of Notre Dame movie/musical

The song is called, on the demo anyway, Beyond My Wildest Dreams--it's one of the better of the new songs (and the best of the new uptempo ones). Menken is rarely given credit for being usch a strong movie *score* (ie incidental music) composer--Little Mermaid is probably his most tunefaul but all 6 he did are as good as most major film scores and he doesn't over-rely on the melodies from his songs the way many musical scores do.

(I listened to my tape of Little Mermaid when I was 9-12 or so nearly everyday though which is maybe why I know the background music so well)
