Ever watch The Critic? Before Disney released Hunchback, they had an episode where Jay (Jon Lovitz) went to the theatre and saw a show called Hunch!, a musical version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, which included songs like, "I've Got a Hunch it's Love."

The great 1996 off-Broadway revue WHEN PIGS FLY had a 'Hunchback' musical parody (music by Dick Gallagher) as part of the "Melody Barn" segment, where it was called "QUASIMODO...that classic love story - with a twist! Now, this is not some cheesy cartoon! This is LIVE ACTION! Now, wait until you see these kids sparkle!"
The Mark Waldrop lyrics (in part) went:
"Now I've got you in my power
High atop this gothic tower
There's death below and heaven above!
While the gates of hell are yawning
Still I think the truth is dawning
I've got a hunch
I'm in Loooove!!!
(Singing cathedral gargoyles: "He's gotta hunch a hunch he's in love...He's gotta hunch a hunch he's in love")
After seeing that, I've found it difficult to take seriously any musicalization of THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME.

MasterLcZ..I know that song! It's soooo funny and cute. My friend was trying to look for a song to sing in our little cabaret and it was in his musical tenor book and I was like "Hmmm Quasimodo? I wonder what that is." We turned to it and luckily he could play it bc he plays piano and we fell in love with it. He ended up singing it and it was hysterical.
I highly recommend the German cast recording! I don't speak German worth a flip but the music and chorus and Drew Sarich as Quasi is definately worth listening for! The movie is my all time fav Disney movie...it's wonderful.

The German recording is fab. GREAT music and great arrangements, even if I can't understand a word of it. It really looked like a great, great show. Pity Disney didn't have the stones to go forward with a truly adult piece of musical theatre from a group of genuine artists. Instead what do we get - TARZAN. Arg!

I worked on it in Berlin. It has an amazing score, with one of the most moving finales I've ever seen. Why Tarzan was chosen over this is a mystery to me.
By the way, the German title is Der Glöckner Von Notre Dame, which translates as The Bell Ringer of Notre Dame. The title was changed because the word "Hunchback" is a terrible insult in German.

Posted: 5/28/06 at 4:07amIf you read Libby Gelman-Waxner's (Paul Ruddnick's)review of the cartoon in Premiere Magazine, she (he) says that it's surprising that Disney didn't make the title more PC and call it the "Hard-to-Fit of Notre Dame"...

In German calling someone "Buckliger" (=Hunchback) is as insulting as it is to call someone a "Hunchback". But the German transaltion of the novel has always been called "Der Glöckner von Notre Dame".

Posted: 5/28/06 at 11:41amI know that there was a lot of controversy surrounding the film when it opened. Is this the reason that a stage version only opened in Germany?
#18re: Hunchback of Notre Dame movie/musical
Posted: 5/28/06 at 11:45amI love this story and am anxiously awaiting the outcome of this and to see it if/when it comes to be.

Ditto on how awesome the music is. Beautiful arrangments, lovely new songs- especially "Einmal," and killer performances.
Its so good, you don't even have to understand German to love it.
They also made the stage version a bit darker than the animated film. At least one major character dies by the end... I know that much. So its a BIT closer to the book in that regard.

There's a French musical spectacle (somewhat rock concert with special effects) called Notre Dame du Paris (I THINK!!!)
It's got some GREAT music. the English translation is awful though

Glad to see someone else has heard of Notre Dame de Paris! I love the music - but yeah, English translation is somewhat lacking.

Bumping this old thread--I'm a huge Menken nut and would kill to hear these new songs (I wonder if he did what he did with Beauty and Mermaid--basing some songs on his incidental music from the films) WHat are thought son the new material
I can't find the CD anywhere--also I know James Lapine directed it--sounds liek such an odd choice in picking him. I wish a version with theoriginally written English lyrics was recorde d(I suppose there's a demo)--it's too bad the project sounds dead.
I also heard that the parts I liked least about the film--ie the gargoyles were largely changed for stage

As for the CD, it is OOP and I only knew of Footlights having it. I'd try eBay and possibly the German Amazon.com which I believe is http://www.amazon.gr
