Pocketsquared Fanadu: Fair enough. Agreeing to disagree is a good solution.
I will add that I think some of the negative opinions are further spurred by the fans' constant defending of the show. Some of the "bashers" would likely be content just to say "I didn't like it" and leave it at that if not attacked at every angle for their opinion.
Granted, I have seen very civil discussions between fans and non-fans of this show, so I could be wrong.

Question for FValle24, if you or someone else doesn't happen to like a particular show, and you state your negativity about that show, does that make you a vampire, too?
I have loved shows/performers that friends of mine didn't like. It's called a difference of opinion.
The "vampire" analogy is becoming a bit tiresome.

In truth, my post was very broad and general. I didn't think anyone would've felt personally attacked by what I said; three posters replied directly to me!
It was my personal "feelings" and I didn’t mention anyone’s name, or any direct quotes.
I find that kind of funny.
And to answer you question Kalimba. I think doing anything unpleasant and negative qualifies for a ‘vampire’ persona. It’s the mentality that I wish to adopt and apply, nothing much to it.
…Time to get out the stake

"I would also like to point out that rabidly defending something is not really much better than rabidly dissing it. "
Oh yes there is. There's a huge difference between positivity and negativity. I obsess over things I like--not things I don't like. If I don't like something, I don't feel the need to dwell on it or make sure every last person on the planet knows how I feel.
Criticism is one thing--very necessary. Harping like a harpie--not.

Right, jrb.
As I said to someone recently: telling your loved one every day how much you adore them is lovely and life-affirming.
Telling your ex every day how much you hate them is crazy.

Laughing louder or before everyone else is a problem with fans at many shows/concerts...I experienced this at the Emily Skinner event at Signature.
No matter the show or the performer, it is still annoying.

Trust me--I've acknowledged that difference. I've only criticized the people who keep going on and on and on.

My abs final thought on this thread: To coin a phrase spoken by a king (hope this isn't too insidery) from Siam (sorry if you're not a history buff), played by an actor named Yul Brynner (sorry again, LBB fans--OK that was mean, and reverse-ageist, {or not so much...}), ETC., ETC., ETC...
We're never going to agree on [tos],except I hope we agree that we love the theatre, the plays, and the players. At least I thought we did?!?

I'm a little hesitant to comment since I haven't seen it, but I've heard the same thing over and over from so many people I'm going to say it anyway.
The problem isn't that there are references that are required for the "masses" to enjoy the show. The problem is that there are masses of fans who sit through every show and scream and carry on at every reference purely for the sake of making sure that everyone within five rows of them knows that they GOT every reference. It is apparently VERY annoying.

And once again, Patash, that shouldn't have ANYTHING to do with critiquing the actual show.
MANY shows have ridiculous fans and it's just as rude as cell phones and talking.
Good grief.

I haven't had the pleasure of seeing the show in person yet, but I have been listening to the CD for several months, spending some of that time catching up on the show's history, blog, youtube sketches, etc.
For all I know, the differences between what's on the CD and what's going on at the Lyceum are all detrimental to the piece. For all I know, the fans in the audience are absolutely ruining the show for everyone around them.
But I will say this: for all the enjoyment I got out of references to Broadway flops and little-known performers, what impressed me most about this show is the obvious passion of these writers to get to Broadway on their own terms. How many of us have dreams we compromise or push out of our lives entirely? Maybe Hunter and Jeff aren't as brilliant as some [tossers] make them out to be, but my goodness, they made it, didn't they? And with a show that's as absurd and intense and they are. Are they now proud of that fact? They ought the be!
Because of their example, I spent much of this summer telling my own vampires to die and got my novel out of my sock drawer (literally). It has been a painful to tear at the scabs of a dream I pushed aside years ago. It has been terrifying to look my vampires in the eyes. Whether or not anything comes of my book, I'm glad I engaged with it again because Hunter and Jeff had the courage to chase their dream.
I enjoy an "insider-y" pat on the back as much as anyone else, but this show is not about Mary Stout as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks and nicely put, ourtime. Yours is not the only emptied-out sock drawer since Hunter and Jeff wrote this show.
And yours are not the only dead or wounded vampires around either.

Look before you leap, Patash. Just because some early audiences were possibly a little overly-enthusiastic doesn't mean they all are. And they're not. By your own word, you haven't seen the show. Hard, then, for you to comment on the audiences & how annoying they are. Don't take other peoples' word for it. Especially when they're so easily annoyed.
ETA: to stay on-topic - I got most of the Broadway references, but not one of the television/pop-culture ones. Didn't make it any less funny to me. I suspect the same would be true if you didn't get the Bway ones. It's funny. It's funnier if you get the reference.
