I saw the show last night and have to say that any lover of great theatre should not miss this show! An intelligent, beautifully crafted, humorous and moving play. And a most amazing performance by Jefferson Mays.
Any diffrences between last summers' show and now?
More furniture and clocks, maybe?
(I saw it twice then and agree. A wonderful performance of a complex and rather unlikeable person.)

Well...I didn't see the show at Playwright's...but I am thinking that perhaps the set has been expanded. The entire onstage back wall is shelved top to bottom with antique clocks and phonographs, and given the scope of the theatre and the height of the ceiling, I would venture to say that this is perhaps a more dramatic visual. Also, the Lyceum Theatre is the perfect venue for this show. The theatre itself is an antique; turned 100 yrs. old last month! Should also mention that since this house is so small, there is not a bad seat to be had. The orchestra only has 14 rows. So, even discount tickets get you good seats.

Yes. Break a leg tonight! Let's hope this one doesn't close right away.
Will you ever forget Jefferson Mays' eyes?
He was wonderful. He should win a Tony. An outstanding performance.

I saw it this past weekend, and was very impressed with the performance and set. The play left me rather cold, as it seemed to dance around the issue of what exactly Charlotte's relationship with the secret police had been, and how generally truthful she had been. The playwright's need to mythologize Charlotte overcame his interest in truth, which I never think is a good idea.
Basically, the play made me wish that I could read a really good factual biography of Charlotte.
Roscoe, that was my first impression when I saw the play for the first time. The second time I enjoyed it much more, realizing that Charlotte is not a neat and tidy 'gay hero'. She is a complex and difficult character.
One can respect Charlottes guts and survivors instincts and still be repelled by her betrayals of her friends and lovers. I admired her yet didn't LIKE her. And thats OK.
