I saw fortunate enough to get to see this play tonight. It was an enlightening experience. If you are a performer (and even if you aren't) even if you throw all of the history out, you can learn SOOO much from just watching Jefferson Mays. The man is nothing short of brilliant, he moves from character to character with an unbelievable ease, and though some of them are based on stereotypes- they are nontheless distinct and all come together well to get the message across.
While I thought that in some ways, the play itself wasn't quite worthy of Mays' performance- I nontheless urge anyone who hasn't made it to this play to go out and purchase their tickets ASAP.
Glad you liked it!! I need to go see it soon!
One of my friends just got back from NY.
She is not 'in the know' when it comes to theatre.
But she said she absoultely loved the play "I Married Myself"
I cried inside.

Well, at least she liked it, Priest.
I actually found Frozen to be more moving than I am My Own Wife, possibly because it had two really complete, compelling characters rather than just one. And it packed more of a punch at the end than IMOW, which (understandably) chose to leave many things up in the air.
I am My Own Wife was quite good in its own right- just not the masterpiece I expected after hearing the universal raves and the Tony win.

I didn't see Frozen but I thought I am My Own Wife was wonderful.
I preferred I AM MY OWN WIFE to FROZEN.
No Frozen closed.
Being held spellbound while Jefferson Mays interacted with over thirty different characters (all of them played by himself), is something I will never forget. It was fascinating to me and to everyone I could urge to see it, as well. Brilliant.
For me, the final moment of the play, the last image, was literally breathtaking.
I just read the script and cannot wait for it to come to the Goodman in Chicago! It will be interesting the see how he handles this piece after what I have imagined in my mind. I'm so excited!

This was hands down one of the greatest pieces I've seen. I didn't see Frozen, but am intrigued. I haven't seen a focused performance like Mr. May's in a LONG time.
I saw both FROZEN and I AM MY OWN WIFE and though they both moved me immensly, I have to say that in the end, I, too, preffered FROZEN. I also saw GOLDA'S BALCONY, another one-person show, a few days after I seeing both plays, and it, too, was extremely powerful.
Mays' performance was extraordinary - the way he switched characters was amazing, but more incredible was the way he inhabited all those characters- he BECAME them. It was indeed a master class in acting.
