Wow, I just got home from seeing the production of I Am My Own Wife by Doug Wright at Dallas Theater Center tonight. It was absolutely amazing. I went into the show not knowing much. I knew it was about a transvestite named Charlotte...and that was about it. I had heard the actor plays 26 different characters (sounded a little bit sketchy).

The set at the beginning is very simple. A slanted stage with 2 tables (one you would find in a dining room with chairs and the other being a stand). There was a painting on the wall...and that was about it. I was afraid I would be bored with the simplicity of the set.
The show started and Damien Atkins came on stage. He started speaking in a German accent (which at first I had a hard time understanding--but I grew accustomed to it very quickly). The show went on and I was a little bored at first, but when Atkins told the stories, he had the audience sitting on the edge of their seats.
The set changed--it was very interesting--the antique furniture in the background...it was almost haunting (atleast it seemed like it to me).

Damien blew me away. 1 hour and 45 minutes all by yourself on stage playing multiple identities...that is the toughest thing I have ever seen on stage and Damien was FLAWLESS. I didn't catch a single mistake. What was amazing was how I could tell who each of the characters was when he would change from one character to another. Brilliant actor.

The whole experience (incredible actor and incredible set) was amazing. If you are in the Dallas area, do not miss out on this show.

I really am at a loss of words--there is no way to truly describe this play. It was by far--the best play I have seen.

I'm thrilled--I get to meet Doug Wright tomorrow. He is coming to our school to talk with those of us who have seen the play. I went to a local Borders after the performance tonight to buy a copy of the play (in hopes of getting it signed by Doug), but they didn't have any copies.

I felt the same way about the show when I saw it on tour in Boston. Brilliant play.

One of my favorite plays of all time. Have seen it many times, three different productions.

I'm so jealous. My aunt and uncle saw it on Broadway and raved about it. She was so happy it won the Tony.

Doug came and talked with us for about 30 minutes today (there were only about 15 students there) and he had an entourage of about 10 people. The man is brilliant--he has such a way with words--the way he was able to get his ideas out so easily. He told us he is currently working on the Little Mermaid for Broadway and another play that he hopes to open next summer (I think he said) about 2 artists from the 60's. I'm not 100% sure if that's accurate, I don't really remember.

I got his autograph and a picture with him which I will cherish forever.

Oh, he made some comments about the Broadway vs. Dallas production of the show--the Broadway production was a little bit darker while the DTC's production was a little bit funnier (had funny moments). Jefferson's portayl of Charlotte was more serious while Atkins' tries to make the show humorous at times. The set is supposedly different in that here the furniture in the back looked destroyed while in the Broadway production, it looked more organized and more like a collection, I think he said.
