I'm sure there are a lot of threads on this song from Cabaret, but I didn't want to bump them. So I made a new one :)
For all I understand about Cabaret, two lines in I Don't Care Much baffle me to no end. Here they are.
'Words sound false when your coat's too thin/Feet don't waltz when the roof caves in'
Any ideas as to what they mean?
You can talk about other aspects of the song too :)

You know it is sad when I think you are over-obsessed.
The song wasn't written for the show.
IF we want to put it into context OF the show, for fun, I would say the line refers to the lies told by the Jews and the Nazis at the beginning of the war.
When Jews, looking out for themselves, turned other Jews over - as the Emcee may have done. And I don't think I have to talk about the little thing the Nazis did, do I?
First line:
To me, coat's too thin means you are poor. Words sound false could mean everything you have to say isn't taken seriously by others because of your appearance.
Second line:
Feet don't waltz because the roof caves in. Metaphor. You're no longer dancing because these are sad times. You don't have a home.
They both mean the same thing. When your situation is so dire that you're starving, freezing, homeless etc. -- who's going to set as a top priority starting a relationship and a family? That's why, at that point in the show, Sally does what she does.
