It depends on the theatre, but for the most part, I love the front row.

Sorta a random thread but thats Ok cause Im a random person.
For me, it depends on the theatre. For a smaller theatre like the Nederlander or the Golden, since the theatre's so small, I much prefer dead center of the orchestra, like row M, as it gives you the whole effect and you still feel really close. For larger theatres, like the Gershwin or the Majestic, I prefer being close. However, I can probably agree that it's better to do that like the second time. I loved the front row in DRS, even though I was all the way on the right, a lot of action took place there.
mikewood~ i was actually in the second row on the left for the first act...so that's where i saw the chandelier fall. i didn't feel dissappointed in it or anything, though that was the fourth time i saw the show so i know how it looks from most angles. it was the 25th time my friend saw the show, and he likes to sit up in the front too. you get the effect no matter where you sit. it's pretty cool.

Seating in the Majestic theater is perfect for front row viewing. (Phantom). The stage is low and so, perfect viewing of the entire stage from the front row! In some theaters (the one Chicago is playing---I don't remember the name), the stage is high and so you have to tilt your head up too far to see---so you'd want to be back further ideally.
Usually, I prefer to be about 8-10 rows back for a musical. With the use of microphones and the amplification, if I sit too close, I tend to be blown away by the sound.
For a play, I prefer to be closer. Third row on the aisle is the perfect seat for me.

It really does depend on the show and the theatre. Dracula was really tough from the front row but I've seen Avenue Q from the front row twice and that was fine. Best front row experience (for me) was at Nine. I felt like I was part of the action. Not to mention the audience interaction part. But it can be different for spectacle-type shows. I sat in the 15th row of the orchestra for Wicked and I found that was ideal.

What about front row at Studio 54 with the current seating set-up? Would that be too close?

I love the front row as well.
What I have seen here in Boston was extra special because I was so close.

No matter what you do, do not sit in the front row at hairspray unless you wanna feel like you are sitting in the very front row of a movie theatre.

It really depends on the show. In the Off-Broadway houses I've been to, sitting in the front row is wonderful. Avenue Q is a good front-row show, as well. Other shows, though? Not so much.
Twelve Angry Men was okay from the front row, but I would have preferred being a few rows back. And musicals are definitely best seen from farther back or the front of the mezzanine, especially if they have dancing. Movin' Out, especially, was an absolute nightmare from the front row- the front of the stage was lined with massive speakers, perfectly positioned to deafen you throughout the show. I would have been mad if I hadn't gotten the seat for student price.
I don't live in NY so i don't get to do cool rush stuff..but when I went to NY the closest I sat was 7th row Center for Rent and Little Women...and I FRIGGIN loved it...In RENT cary shields was totally looking at me and my friends *i'm not being a teeny he was..during Seasons we were the only ones who were all into it and the lights are slightly up for that song* and in Little Women i could see ever expression on Sutton's face...i love sitting close..i feel like i get more out of it close than in the balcony.
3rd row for Wicked in Chi-town! yay! Kristoffer Cusick up close!
AGAIN!!
YAY!!!
