I don't care if someone dosen't care for musicals.

It bothers me when I hear statements like "musicals suck" and "that's stupid!". This is a blantant disregaurd for an art form many find great beauty in.

And I feel the same way with every other genre of art. People who are above pop/rap/etc music annoy me to no end.

That's my stand, I may not like certain genre's, but I will always respect them.

Personally I just ignore it. If that stubborn then there's no point in changing their mind. I just think they're stupid for missing out on the brilliance and quality of the songs found in musicals.

In my mind it's something written by Stephen Sondhiem vs. something written by Fifty Cent... If you had that choice why the hell would you pick Fifty Cent?

I wouldn't comment.
That this person wouldn't want to see a musical is okay with me. It's probably best for those of us who enjoy musicals. But what really disturbs me about this person's comment is its close minded-ness. It screams idiot. And would you really want that kind of ignorance occupying the seat next to you in a theatre?

I kind of feel the same way a lot of the time I suggest a straight play to anyone on here who asks about things to see. Some are receptive, others are like "Um...no." Or my favorite. "There's no music in that!"

People have different tastes. That's all.

I hadn't thought of Broadway as anything but musicals before I moved up here and discovered how the straight plays can actually move me MORE than musicals.

Do I think people should give each a chance? Of course. But I know there are things I won't enjoy, so I allow others that freedom too.

My favorite was when I worked at a box office with a guy who everyday would spout out something about "Brittany Spears music or Paris Hilton saying they were "Gods" and that Musicals are not really music at all." Now that was one of the funniest comments I'd ever heard of in my life in Theatre. If you don't like musicals, that's ok, but for heavens sake, you cannot compare a staged musical like "Hello, Dolly" to a Brittany Spears song.....

I roll my eyes, as I have MANY friends who do not understand why I love to listen to musicals...but I have been doing my best to get in touch with other forms of music, so I can be well-rounded...but I steer clear of the Spears....

I agree that there's no comparasion between a pop artist and a theatrical vocalist or any true vocalist. I can't really think of anyone in the pop field who compares to the Jason Danieleys or Audra McDonalds of the theatre. But they are also two entirely different types of music and performers.

However, the beauty of theatre is that there's a place and something for everyone. It's non-discriminatory in the entertainment of its audience. A musical doesn't have to be of a more traditional flavor like My Fair Lady, Curtains, or Corem Boy (which I thought was wonderful). It can be Pop or Rock like Rocky Horror, Mamma Mia, Jersey Boys, Xanadu, or Legally Blonde.

I enjoy plays as well as musicals and the local park playhouse productions in the summer sun are a blast! In the end, this person is only denying himself the full richness of theatre's live performance by limiting his experiences to plays. If that's what he wants - so be it. Me, well I'm greedy -- I want the whole pie, not just a piece. re: I Refuse To See a Musical! Yuck!

"I had a teacher once who said she hated plays and musicals because she thought they were "incredibly boring," and she can't stand "watching people on a stage for hours and hours being all dramatic," but then a few days later she said she loves Wicked. I was just like "Ummm....you do realize that was a musical, right?""

I once had a history teacher who said that she doesn't like musicals because it isn't natural for people to break out in song. However, she loved my school's production of WSS, and the revival of Pacific Overtures. I put two and two together and told her that she only likes musicals in which Sondheim is involved. She has since seen Sweeney and Company and loved them.

Anyway, I liken her distaste for musicals to my distaste for sports. I find watching most sports as interesting as watching paint dry, and I will give it many chances and never enjoy it. But I will never say "sports suck" because I would be offended if someone said "musicals suck", To each his own.

I wouldn't exactly say that Broadway musicals are suffering from unpopularity. Both Broadway and the West End are smothered with musicals - the ratio of musicals to plays in both cities is very top heavy at the moment. The fact is that most tourists would prefer to see a musical than a straight play. The majority of theatre revenue comes from tourism and most tourists prefer to spend their money on musicala. Maybe because musicals are generally seen as an "event" and somewhere that you can SEE where your money has gone. I think that this is a real problem on both Broadway and West End. Producers need to start countering the imbalance.

What are other peoples' opinions on this?

That's a terrible mindset and yet another reason people get turned off.
