Doodle, I've always been curious to see the girl who Andrea McArdle replaced in Annie.
She has a big voice, tho not as big as McArdle, IMO. Legend is that she cracked under the pressure.
None of these orphans look like Kristin, but it is from her website.
I believe she's the one in the back next to President Carter, as I recognize the other girls (with the exception of Amy Carter) from the show (I saw the original production of Annie). Scary thing is I can name them, too (with the exception of one).
Front row (L-R) - Shelley Bruce, Danielle Brisbois, Amy Carter
2nd row (L-R) - Andrea McArdle, Diana Barrows, Donna Graham, Robin Finn, Janine Ruane
Last row - Kristen Vigard
I figured that one was her...but she is a foot taller than McARdle...Annie the Amazon!
And that is the beginning of my being a "stickler" for names in Broadway shows. I scare myself sometimes at the things I remember, especially names of people I don't even know!
When the Studo recreation album came out, my only previous exposure to the show was the song that was performed on the Tonys. At that time, I remember thinking, 'Wow, a Norwegian SOUND OF MUSIC.'
The album/CD isn't awful, but it was sad (for me) to see the gradual slide in Rodgers' output; from the best of R&H to NO STRINGS to DO I HEAR A WALTZ? to TWO BY TWO to REX and finally to I REMEMBER MAMA, I could almost physically chart Rodgers' declining health and abilities.
Each of Rodgers' last shows had moments to enjoy and savor, but I found the MAMA score to be so delicate as to be almost frail, perhaps in conjunction with the composer's health.
But, if you are truly a fan of musical theatre, MAMA is an important disc to own, if only for the historic fact that it was the final work of a musical giant.
After eyeing the CD for years, I'm glad I finally bought it. Had WAT not gone into Virgin records last weekend, I wouldn't have had a chance to buy it.
Unfortunately, neither Virgin nor Tower had the CD *I* was looking for!
"Rex" has a pretty good score. I love the Tudor overture and the song Ed Evanko sings as a lullabye. "Christmas At Hampton Court" is classic Rodgers melodically and the lyrics are very funny. And Elizabeth's song, I think called "Till Then" is very good. Oh and "On The Field Of Cloth of Gold" is very stirring. I think it was just the wrong time for that show (plus the beheadings don't make for great fun....)
I, um, only have the album....and of course no turntable anymore...never replaced it and now feel guilty.
"Uncle Chris was played by Oscar Homolka(Sp.?). "
I thought that was the name, but I wasn't 100% sure and wasn't able to check the IMDB -- which I have now done . You have the last name spelled right, the first name was spelled "Oskar."
allofmylife-
Yes, the REX score is great...the pairing of Rodgers with Sheldon Harnick was inspired. And Nicol Williamson was a great Henry.
My favorites are "Away From You" and the melodramatic "Where Is My Son?"
I was kind of hoping that Margo would have added something, but I'm thinking maybe he didn't see it.
I'd have to read this thread carefuly to see how it morphed from talk of "I Remember Momma" to "Annie" (maybe Kristin Vigard who was in both?) ANyway, I just came across the program from the third or fourth time I saw "Annie" and the girl playing the lead was Sarah Jessica Parker. Thinking back, she was noi Andrea McArdle, but she acted the part much better.
allofmylife, don't worry about it. These threads sometime take on a life of their own. I happened to see Annie with SJP as well. I also have a picture of the two of us at the stagedoor.
Bestbars, thank you!! That was very sweet.
I was surprised myself, that I could still name those orphans. I have the book, "Annie, a Theatre Memoir" which briefly explains the Kristen/Andrea thing.
...just to clarify, I was paraphrasing from Kristen's bio on her own website about her "breakdown."
HELP!
I am doing MAMA on the air this week and want to mention the Ian Ziering connection. HOW do you pronounce his last name?
ZEE-air-ring?
ZEE-ring
ZHEE-ring?
ZHEE-air-ring?
Any ideas??
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
