What does it matter that they're simplisitc? Not everything needs to use ultra big words just to sound smart. RENT has some pretty simple rhymes, and nobody is poking fun at that. Granted, there are a few flub lines in the show, I think every show- even Sondheim, dare I say it - has a few flub lines. And I'd much rather listen to Swart's music over "the other guy's"

And here I thought the rhyme was "I'd sooner die defying gravity" which actually is a good lyric. Oh well.

It's BUY? WTF. I always thought it was "try." Y'know, a line that makes grammatical sense.

I never understood the critisism of some of the lines in Wicked such as the 'I've got something to confess...a reason' arent they cheesy like that in order to simulate the Wizard of Oz movie?

Not that Im sticking up for his talent or lack of, im more of an emotional person that likes things that speak to me emotionally, I just think that show is what it is for a reason.

Obviously Idina needs to work on her pronunciation ha. There's a part in "Popular" that I have no clue what Kristen said, it sounds like "clen-destiny" which isn't a word or phrase.

I'm sorry -- the lyrics to the original WIZARD OF OZ are brilliant.

the line in popular is "i know clandestinely"

clandestinly: Kept or done in secret, often in order to conceal an illicit or improper purpose (from dictionary.com)

it's a word. i don't know if your post was serious. but there it is, if anyone else doesn't know what kristin is singing!

So just because it went gold it means that it has great lyrics? Mamma Mia went gold too...
I think the Wicked recording is extremely appealing and entertaining and I respect everyone's opinion unlike some people in this board that told of CatsNY for expressing his opinion, but let's face it, rhyming "was" with "Oz," almost the whole "Dancing Through Life" sequence, and "there are bridges you crossed, you didn't know you crossed, until you've crossed" are not examples of a great lyricist. And this is not done on purpose to emulate the lyrics from the Wizard of Oz. I do give props to Schwartz for the dramatic irony in "The Wizard and I" ("I'll be so happy I could melt" or "When people see me they will scream"), the fun lyrics for "Popular" and the climatic Act I finale.

"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"

You know that bully in elementry school that steps on all the girls shoes? Why are there so many of them here?

And why are there still so many of there little followers that protect everything they say and do?

actually I use this example as another reason to write him off... it's stupid. he can write some okay tunes, but the man could not write a decent lyric to save his life...

also... this exact topic has been discussed before...

NOTHING productive can come from this statment, and that is what it is a statment NOT an opinion!

opinion - I dont like the musical
statment - This musical is poorly written

I loved this board once and now everytime Im here there is someone making snotty snide comments to people who are just making conversation, how did this happen? And can we change it? I would tell myself to just ignore it but sometimes I think that fuels there fire to be heard.

oh well

"This musical is poorly written"

This statement can be an opinion, as it fits one and three.

its funny how you can predict what type of responce you will be reading by who posted it!

I knew the definitions would be comming, I was actually looking forward to it. See the problem is that instead of looking up exact definitions I only know how things sound. Life is 95% percent perception. Statments or opinions presented in this maner come off in a way that puts people on the defensive.

I love this game!

So your opinion is that opinions are not opinions?

But you knew my response would fit a certain set of criteria, that I am very happy about.

And my opinion is there are no facts without evidence. re: 'I'd Sooner Buy, Defying Gravity...' What does that line mean?

If some people see their opinions as better, that is thier issue. I tend to call it out by tying in some facts, instead of being emotional.

Wicked is not all that bad.- Opinion
I enjoyed it twice, I did not enjoy it once.-fact
I own the CD.- fact
I like other things better.-fact
Other things are better.- Opinion.

re: 'I'd Sooner Buy, Defying Gravity...' What does that line mean? It really is all in fun, for me.- fact

By the way, I actually agree Cats comment in this thread is really far too snarky. It seems as though he was trying to rile people up a bit. "He cannot write a decent lyric to save his life." is actually not an opinion so much as, a laughable opinion.
Although all of that is simply my opinion.

My point is, no matter how snarky and "smart" we act, they are still just our opinions as well, remembering that can really help it all not seem so bad.

Hmm, on topic to end:
I agree with the posts that said it is referencing back to the previous line. (And would like to think the second meaning is also there on purpose.)
