I loved him in Taboo, and consider that performance one that is on his plus side rather than minus.

I'm not sure if that was in response to what I said about Taboo factoring in to lost votes, but if it was, to clarify: I meant the drama with Rosie, not the performance itself. The latter was *definitely* on the plus side. re: I did NOT think Raul deserved the tony...am I alone?

Personally, I wanted Jonathan Groff to win...

But having said that...

I think Esparza was GREAT as Bobby...I would even go as far as to say TO ME, he was the PERFECT Bobby...

BUT...

Having said that...I also think that the character of Bobby is a really weak (and rather boring) character. I was in this show during my undergrad at CU Boulder as Harry and for me, I was really glad at the time that I wasn't cast as Bobby (one more time I was SO thrilled to be a character actor and not a stereotypical "leading man"). Bobby is not that great. He sits back watching Amy, watching the karate, watching "The Ladies Who Lunch," watching everything happen around him, etc., etc., etc. I LOVE "Being Alive," and that 5 minutes rocks for that actor (especially for Esparza...wowza!!!), but other than that...what is so great??? "Someone is Waiting"? Boring. "MARRY ME A LITTLE"??? BORING! I don't like that song (personally). "Barcelona" is fun, but earth-shattering? No.

I think this just PROVES that Bobby in COMPANY will never win a Tony Award...regardless of how brilliant the actor may be performing in the role.

(NOTE: Larry Kert lost in 1970 and Boyd Gaines wasn't even nominated for the 1996 Revival.)

I completely disagree that Bobby is boring; I think it's a fascinating role, and that part of what's so brilliant here is that Raul and Doyle have taken a part that people often find boring or empty and really made him into something substantial.

That said, while you're perfectly entitled to think that Bobby's songs are boring, and that his material is not "earth-shattering," But you're saying that you wanted Groff to win and that a Bobby will never win a Tony because he doesn't have "earth-shattering material," to which I can only say... and Groff does?

Yeah, sorry for the confusion!

Okay, I've had enough of this mess for today. I'm going to sleep.

My friend and I were talking online. I told her to watch the Company performance on the Tonys. She came back after about a minute or so and said she was bored at watching the performance, a performance that is supposed to be the height of Raul's character.

David Hyde Pierce, on the other hand, consistently keeps the audience entertained and laughing, even though some may not feel he is giving a heartfelt performance.

Perhaps the Tony voters also felt bored. Everyone has different tastes in what they enjoy seeing onstage. What one person saw as Raul pouring out his soul onstage, another probably saw as Raul giving a boring performance. You don't know what the actual votes were. Perhaps it was almost even between the two.

I can absolutely see why it would bore people out of context; it has the power you afford it during the show because you've spent two hours and fifteen minutes building up to it. whereas on TV, it's just dropped in your face.
