They were only taking pre-orders when I saw the show, but were playing it. I guess that was because it was in April.

I really enjoyed the show when I saw it, particularly the act 1 finale...however, comparing what I saw in March to the official recording, they seem to have upped the tempo of some of the songs, perhaps so everything would fit on the one CD. They also kept dialogue from the beginning or even middle of songs to a bare minimum, taking away from the impact of the songs, in my opinion. Overall, I am not very happy with how the recording turned out. (Edited, just to mention that the vocals are excellent, a great job by Jenn, Cheyenne, Sharon, and the rest of the cast. The changes are of course not their fault. I still think they're great..)
It's just like what happened to the Hairspray OBCR, they edited and condensed or completely cut certain parts of numbers and/or necessary dialogue, making it a waste of a recording. The very inferior recordings just don't live up to the live performances. Once you are used to hearing the show in its original live form, the changes & cuts on the recording leave a sour taste.
I don't know exactly why they did this for ASU, as the entire CD clocks in at 57:56, well shy of the maximum 80 minutes that fit on a standard CD. If there is space, why not included as much of the score as possible?

Probably to make it appeal to Elvis Fans who have not seen the show.
I have to disagree about the Hairspray recording. I think it's one of the best in recent years. Dialogue is often kept to a minimum on cast recordings - that's not new. And there are changes to the songs on the Hairspray OBCR because it was recorded before the show opened and changes were still being made to the lyrics, etc.
The tempos on Cast recordings also seem to be generally faster. The upped tempo helps create more of a frenetic energy - some thing that is sometimes harder to do with just audio since you are lacking the lights, sets, dancing, etc. And since the cast doesn't have to worry as much about dancing, moving, etc - they can put everything they have in their vocal performance. It's not random - there's a psychology involved to the whole process on how to orchestrate, etc for the cast recording vs. the live experience.
back to the ASU cd...how much was it at the theatre? i'm pretty sure it's about $15 on amazon. but is it more at the theatre?
Last week I took a group of 7th and 8th grade students to see it. I've had my CD on order for weeks now (I saw it back in previews) and the kids all bought CDs at the show! Here I am, still waiting - and my students all have it!
correct me if im wrong, but cds are always more at the theater

I just got it. I'm in love with it - Cheyenne sounds WONDERFUL, and the orchestrations sound great as well. That was one of the things that I really loved about the show.
