On the virtual line. Unfortunately, I cannot go, as it turns out.
Can't help but wonder how many people signed up...

Given the fact that it is a total rain storm outside who would wnt to go if they got tickets for it anyways.
I don't know if Shakespeare In The Park is rain or shine but I can't see it going on with the way it is currently raining in NYC.

Oh yeah. I'm sure they've cancelled it...or at least seriously postponed it.
It's more the principal of the thing...if you know you can't use the tickets, don't sign up for them. That's the courteous thing to do. IMHO.

Posted: 5/27/08 at 6:43pmI used to work for Shakespeare in the Park. No performances are cancelled until at least 8:15 - 8:30. They do this because they try to go on if at all possible. Sometimes it is raining early in the evening but then stops. If you have tickets I would still go to the theater in case it stops or slows down enough for them to proceed. I've never heard of this virtual line, can someone explain what that is?

Posted: 5/27/08 at 6:44pmI tried to get tickets from the Virtual Line but no suck luck. However, I walked by the Delacorte about an hour ago and it looked like all systems go. Plus, it's clearing up now and the sun is out.

Posted: 5/27/08 at 6:51pmIt's a new thing they're doing this year. Beginning at midnight you can put your name in once to try and get 2 tickets for that evening's performance. They put up sometime after 1:15 or so (I checked around then and there werre no results yet) if you won them or not (you have to sign back in).

Posted: 5/27/08 at 6:52pmDoes they actually perform the show in the park? Or is it in a theater?

You have a whooooooooooooooole summer to get tickets. I wouldn't worry about 1 performance. (For the record, tickets that aren't picked up are released to the standby line.)
I wonder which quarto they're using. I assume they can't go the entire 4 hours...

I can't wait to see this production! I've studied/taught Hamlet extensively and it's my favorite Shakespeare piece.
Shakespeare + Hamlet + Awesome cast = an awesome summer night!

Posted: 5/28/08 at 12:36amWhy would you sign up to try for tickets if you know you won't be able to use them? Just to say you won?

Yeah, and you had a whooooooooooooooole summer to sign up for tickets, but instead you intentionally picked a night you knew you couldn't go, then bragged about it here. Just because the one ticket on one night won't make a huge difference doesn't change the fact that what you did was stupid.
Wanting life but never knowing how

Posted: 5/28/08 at 6:34amHey guys, he said "as it turns out", meaning that something must have come up between the time he signed up and the time the winners were announced.

Or the phrase was put there to make it seem that way. It can be read either way ~ the problem with not being able to hear tone of voice through the internet.
Yes, a lot of us have all summer to try for tickets. But most people I know if there's even a chance they couldn't use them wouldn't bother to sign up. A last-minute emergency is one thing. Knowing you likely have something to do but putting your name in to see if you can win is something else. Principle-wise. This isn't the first time stuff like this has come up ~ with various posters. I've seen it a few times with the Live for 5 tickets at Playwrights, even when opening night is not rescheduled. "I won, but I can't use them..." It just gets annoying.

Yes, please do indeed note the "as it turns out."
But you're welcome to think I'm an a**hole anyway, as per usual, orangeskittles, jordangirl, emcee.

Hey, if you legitimately thought you could use the ticket but an emergency came up, fine. Cool. It just read to me as kind of a casual "Oh well..." thing. Especially given the culture that seems to have evolved on here of people (not meaning you specifically) entering just to see if they win and then saying "Oh, I did, but I can't use..."
I'm sorry something came up and you couldn't make it.

I would have liked to go, as well. I understand where you're coming from (and I see now how non-chalant the original message reads), but I was indeed hoping to intend.
As John Lennon said "life is what happens to you when you're busy making other plans."
