Or one of the "dregs of society."
I saw Rock of Ages this evening and had a wonderful time. It's certainly not a brilliant musical by an stretch of the imagination. The paper-thin plot is cheesy and is nothing more than an excuse to shoe-horn in the songs. But, the singing is fantastic, the band sounds wonderful, and the songs are great. Not your typical Broadway musical, but a very fun night out.
Constantine was out, but Jeremy Jordan was fantastic. An amazing voice. What a set of pipes he has. I heard some people at intermission remarking, "He's the understudy?!" Savannah also sounded great. I also thought Mitchell Jarvis was hilarious in his quirky supporting track. Actually, all of the supporting players were hilarious- Lauren Molina, Wesley Taylor, Adam Danheisser, and Michelle Mais.
I loved what they did with the set, and thought the lighting was great. At times, the sound was a little off, as there were some songs where the band was a LOT louder than the singers, at least from where we were sitting.
Like I said, certainly not a brilliant show, but I thought it was a more enjoyable evening, and accomplished what it set out to do a lot better than either 9 to 5 or Shrek. I am not disappointed that this show was among the 4 nominees for Best Musical this year.

You're not the scum of the earth. Acctually, I appreciate how you can express affection for a show and realize fun cheesy musicals have their place.
I haven't seen the show, and I will say that the snobby side of me felt very disdainful towards it for a while. However, after seeing them give one of the best Tony performances of the evening at the last Tonys ceremony, and listening to some of the songs from the cast recording, it seems like the show at least provides a fun evening at the theatre. And why shouldn't that be allowed?
I'm glad you enjoyed it. It is such a fun show.
What a confusing thread title.
I was all set to congratulate you on becoming a Broadway orchestra contractor...

adamgreer: I'm glad you enjoyed the show. I did too.
The only problem with your continuing to reference that boorishly insulting phrase is that you only fuel the ego of its perpetrator.
From what I've read on this board, most people who have trashed it, and continue to make snide remarks, haven't seen it. How crazy is that...
Glad you enjoyed it AdamGreer.

I've never really understood why it's a bad thing to like fun and cheesey musicals. It isn't as thought they're trying to pass themselves off as the best musical of all time - most of them accomplish exactly what they want. A ridiculous plot, and just general fun. It's the same with Hairspray, Mamma Mia, Xanadu and other shows. (Not knocking any of those - I happen to enjoy all three).
I didn't know that people were supposed to apologize for liking musical theatre - you can love the good and the bad :) I for one haven't seen Rock of Ages, but I would like to.
Sphynx, given that Hairspray's score is completely original, I wouldn't lump it in with Xanadu, Mamma Mia, or Rock of Ages.

I didn't mean creativity wise - I meant in terms of the story. It's a fun musical - it touches some very strong point, the overall feelign Hairspray was intended to give was a feeling of fun (along with making you think . . I'm contradicting myself)
I'm just saying, I see a lot of people being judged for liking said musicals - I think that's ridiculous.
That really wasn't meant offensively :/

I was gonna say that I bet this thread had something to do with ROCK OF AGES.
Please, at this point, any arguments about this hit show are moot. It's gone far beyond proving itself.
Let the majority enjoy it, and those wannabe snobs walk around with sticks up their asses. Who cares.
I ended up doing the lotto for it last night at the last second and won and had a great time. Funny enough, when I saw it in previews (turned out it was the last preview with opening night happening the next day) I thought, it was good, but I didn't understand what all the hype was about. Then, I went again last night and totally fell in love with it and left wondering when my next trip to the Brooks Atkinson Theatre will be.
Brilliant deductions skills, YankeeFan. It's not as though this tongue-in-cheek reference hasn't come up a few dozen times in the last 6 months.
Girlfriend, don't be so hard on yourself! (besides you're the one who has seen every Elphaba on Broday
)
I loved this show. And you're so right, it was indubitably better than 9 to 5 or Shrek.
