I just ran into a girl I graduated high school with...we were never really friends, and I always thought she was pretty fake. She used to get the leads in all the plays, while I couldn't sing, so just got stuck in the chorus because the teachers knew I was a good kid who wouldn't miss practice.
She's taking acting classes here, and I work at a Broadway press firm. We were down the block from my building, so when she asked me what I was doing, I said, "I work right there." I motioned my hands towards my building, which just happens to be next door to the Nederlander theatre.
I then said I had to get back to work and hurried off.
I'm also tiny with big curly hair, so I'm really hoping this girl walked away with the impression that I am Rent's new Mimi Marquez...

NNY,
it's because those people who thought they were all that and a bag of chips in high school (had to use an HS term for that. :) ) suddenly graduated, got out in the real world, and were put and their place, falling right off of that high horse into a steamy pile of.....
That is why they, most of the time, end up being nice to the people they made fun of in HS years down the road.

People never grow up or mature or change into more sincere people, especially after high school. I think you were right to assume that her hug was fake, that she wasn't seriously happy or surprised to see you. The good thing is, there's a chance you managed to make her feel bad by intimating that you might have the kind of job she wishes she had when you actually don't! Good for you! She deserves it for getting all those leads just because she had a talent for singing.
Next time throw something at her. She's got it coming.

Hey, I got stopped a couple of times because kids thought I WAS Mimi!
I was doing another internship with Students Live! for Rent. We had to wear all black and I had black ballet slippers on, so I guess I looked "young actress running out for a bite to eat in between shows".
After the show, this woman was chewing Sebastian ARcelus' ear off, and I felt bad because these young girls really wanted his autograph and their bus was leaving. They were too shy to say anything, and since I kinda know him, I nudged him and went, "Hey, these girls really want your autograph and their bus is leaving..."
One of their teachers must have thought I was annoyed that no one wanted my autograph, so she goes to me, "Oh, they're all waiting for YOUR autograph, too!!!!!"
Then at the next Rent workshop, some girl came up to me and said something...I had no idea what she said, so I was just, "Oh, okay." My friend went to me, "Did she just say, 'you were really good'"? And I realized that's what she said. Hahaha.
I KNEW I could pass as a crack-addict stripper Latina if I really tried!!!!

Posted: 8/21/03 at 3:43pmIt's always funny to see the cream of the high school crop curdle, isn't it? I myself was not too cute in high school... I was 6'2, 240 pounds and my waist was 44 inches! And all the popular guys would always make fun of my belly, and other ****ty stuff. Now I'm 6'6, 175 pounds and my waist is at a much nicer 33 inches! I can't wait for the reunion to go back and see them with illegitimate children and beer guts.

I'm just really amused to how this thread turned out :)
Namo, I don't know if you were being sarcastic, but I really wasn't trying to mislead her...I really was pointing to my building, and I realized she might be confused after it happened. I've been telling people I know that I've been "working for Broadway" all summer, which I AM, but they all know that I'm obviously not a performer. And this girl really WAS obnoxious in high school. I remember when we both played mice/chorus girls in a production of Cinderella when we were 10. Her mother was putting LAYERS of eyeshadow and lipstick on this little girl, it was ridiculous.
It's been three years, and I never assumed that her hug was fake...people DO grow-up.

I was being sarcastic, but there is truth in jest, and as Carl Reiner said recently, it's the jester's job to point out things that people might not be comfortable looking at head on.
But really, there's no point in holding her mother's behavior against her, especially when it was when you were ten years old.

Believe me, she wasn't much better when we were 18 than when we were 10.
Like I said, I have NOTHING AGAINST HER now. All summer, I've been working in the theatre district, I've been able to work backstage at so many big Broadway events this year, I've gotten to know a lot of the actors, I've made connections, I'm really happy with where things have gone! I know I'll never be up there like Sutton, (then again, I COULD have a good character voice, so if I'm willing to gain a little weight...maybe I could play Tracy? :)) but I'm doing well for myself and trying to make things happen.
I'm not jealous of this girl, I have nothing against her, I wish her all the luck in the world, I hope she DOES make it to Broadway IF THAT'S WHAT SHE WANTS...
FAME is one of my favorite movies, and I always thought it was the saddest thing when the golden actor boy from high school is a waiter in the end...I know it happens all the time, but I hate to see it happen to anyone I know, especially when I know that they always had dreams of making it.
