re: I'm hitting the town!

Yes, Mister Matt, individual taste is often strange. lol I thought SA was just so powerful and moving and the music was fresh, edgy and beautiful. Hairspray I found incredibly pretentious, with humour that was just so forced and "unfunny" and every song in the score was just bland and repetitive. And Edna played by a man - I just didn't get it - it just seemed purely contrived and gimmicky. I agree that the finale was excellent - but that's mainly down to the terrific choreography and the highly energetic performances.

re: I'm hitting the town!

Ive just got in from a few little glasses of champer's at Kettners . All that talk took me there after second acting 'Zorro'. The place was heaving and everyone was having the best of times. The 'Zorro' crowd were having a right fiesta too! What a shame its closing and its business is doing really well after putting its notice up.

Yes, Zorro - though I found the score a bit forgettable - was a very enjoyable show. Far worse whows than this have run for longer.

Ahhh...so you didn't see the original film, I take it? The character of Edna was created for the legendary drag artist, Devine, and the casting of a man in the role in the stage production was not only a tribute to the late actor, but fits perfectly into the show's theme of embracing people for who they are, not what they look like. I think the show would lose so much if the role were played by a woman. I guess the intentional camp humor is an acquired taste. I found the entire musical to be right in line with the spirit of the original John Waters film which I loved so much, I saw it six times in its original release.
