I'm hitting the town!

The devonian one is in town today- I've avoided London for the whole of 2009 to date... now what shall I see???

re: I'm hitting the town!

Why didn't you mention it earlier?

'Zorro' maybe?
'Sunset' possibly?

re: I'm hitting the town!

Last weekend I saw Zorro, La Cage aux Folles and Oliver. I enjoyed all three shows and recommend them all. La Cage was my favorite as it is a nearly flawless production, though the other two are utterly delightful. Zorro's weaknesses are more than made up for by the commitment and exuberance of one of the most spirited casts I've seen in the West End (though the theatre is in dire need of renovation). And Oliver is visually spectacular, if a bit rushed. Purists may find Oliver to be a bit too overblown, but as it was my first opportunity to see a professional production of the show, I found it gorgeous, with Jodie Prenger's Nancy being the highlight of the production. All three shows were PACKED when I saw them and the audiences were quite enthusiastic. Zorro is closing March 14th, so I suggest catching it while you can.

Glad to hear you enjoyed Jodie's performance Mister Matt as she was my favourite to win the competition.

Did you find somewhere decent for afternoon tea?

re: I'm hitting the town!

YES! I took you up on your recommendation and we had tea with friends at the Haymarket Hotel, which was wonderful. We stayed nearly three hours. The service was terrific and the sandwiches and confections were scrumptious. We also had a lovely dinner at Kettner's and indulged in ice cream at Harrod's.

I'm pleased you liked it.

I haven't heard of Kettner's so shall google and maybe try that myself!

re: I'm hitting the town!

Kettners is a glorified Pizza Epxress and has been there for years. Its a great place for meeting friends before or after a show. It just doesn't feel like a pizza restaurant, its champagne bar is fab! I've been going there at least once a week for the last 25 years.
Its just behind the Place on Romilly Street.

re: I'm hitting the town!

I didn't find any similarity between Kettner's and Pizza Express (we dined at both), but then Kettner's was apparently reintroduced last November, so I have no idea what it was like previously. The Brasserie menu seemed quite a bit more sophisticated than Pizza Express and the food we had was excellent.

If you haven't seen Zorro, then definitely catch it before it leaves. The ensemble are my personal fav in the West End - they just seem so committed to the show. Also you have Emma Williams and Matt Rawle singing their hearts out while dancing flamenco and swinging over the stalls (even though that's not actually Matt Rawle on the rope)

re: I'm hitting the town!

I missed Matt Rawle, but his understudy (I left my program at home) was wonderful. It didn't hurt that he reminded me of a young Johnny Depp, either. And Lesli Margherita as Inez nearly runs away with the show.

re: I'm hitting the town!

Ah well when I saw it I had Lesli's understudy on, so I can't comment on her performance.

Did you see Paul Basleigh (first understudy) or Mark Powell (second understudy)?

On a slight sidetrack, why is there no souvenir programme available still?

re: I'm hitting the town!

Looking at the website, I'm sure it was Mark Powell.

re: I'm hitting the town!

I hit the town today and done a theatre double super whammy, I was going to start a new thread on this, but saw this one and thought I might as well tag it to this, as it is sort of relevant.

I woke up this morning with a touch of melancholy, so thought I treat myself, so went to see Hairspray and Billy Elliot, both done on day tickets, both shows excellent, proved to be the perfect cure.

If you were going to do a theatre double super whammy, what would you see to cheer you up?

How were the shows???

re: I'm hitting the town!

Definitely Hairspray (maybe even twice), or Wicked. However, I don't think one could get both on day seats - they are both very popular and both open at 10am.

re: I'm hitting the town!

Once was more than enough for me to see Hairspray. lol

Back to what I've always said about personal tastes. Most people seem to love that show - but it bored me senseless, mainly because I hated the music.

re: I'm hitting the town!

Both shows excellent, they are two of my top three shows in the West End at the moment, the other being Les Miserable.

re: I'm hitting the town!

For me, the best three shows currently in the west End are Billy Elliot, Wicked and Sunset Boulevard. But, after it transfers at the end of March, I would put Spring Awakening at the head of that list.

re: I'm hitting the town!

Sunset would be number four in my top five, with either Phantom or La Cage for the final slot.

re: I'm hitting the town!

bob8rich - Interesting what you were saying about personal taste. I loved Hairspray, especially the finale, which I found to be one of the most energetic and joyous in musical theatre. I'm surprised you were bored. But then, I hated Spring Awakening. Other than a couple of songs, that was the one that put me to sleep and left me totally bewildered.

Where is Sister George? I told her that straight men posted on this site and she didn't believe me.
