Rents are still high out there, but the apartments tend to be a lot bigger.

I don't get that either- why they HAVE to be near Times Square. Or in it.
Heck, I'm considering North Jersey. Or I'll take a far suburb.
If you want to be a star go to Hollywood. If you want to be an actor got to New York. Or better yet, go to school.

Or how about going around the country and trying your luck at the best regional theaters in the country?
I'd love to do that, and I'm even planning on it.
I think that New York right away is just too much of a quick jump.
Well, duuuh, BlueWizard. The nobodies can't get discovered stepping out of their midtown apartment drinking a soy latte if they live in the boonies - uh, burroughs! Isn't that how it works?
Seriously though, what's the population of Manhattan alone? And generally what sort of people live there? (Professionals, taxi drivers, etc.)
Sorry for all the questions about rent, it's cuz, like tFan, I'm hoping to move to NYC in the next couple of years as a law apprentice and I'm trying to get an idea of how much money to expect to spend.
Yes, I had a hidden agenda too. I'm thinking about going to NYU for my graduate studies. But rent in New York is astronomical. How do struggling students do it, particularly those living near NYU? (Do students even live near NYU?)
MOMMY and DADDY
I think President Bush is proposing special funding for students in the arts if he is reelected....
(Do students even live near NYU?)
If their names rhyme with Sherry-Late and Mashley Zolson.
LOL. So where do the college kids live?
I'm looking at craigslist right now. There's such a wide range of rent prices. What's a good area to live in that doesn't charge an arm and a leg? Astoria looks mighty nice.

A few things to think about:
if you are more interested in stage work then NYC is the place to be - but if film work, commercials, TV is your real dream then I'd head off to LA. Also petty as this may sound think about the weather. It gets extremely cold in NYC in the winter and I know people who have left because of it. Perhaps look at craigslist or something to get an idea of what it will cost you to get a place to live. I know my best friend just bought a 2 br condo in LA for much less than my monthy bill for my NYC studio. The money thing becomes a big issue when freeing up time to audition. If you have to work all the time to stay in NYC, then how do you audition? There are a lot of pros and cons here. I'd go the total loser route and sit down and make a list of the pros and cons of each place. See what is the best fit for you.
Whoa - you can't be saying that housing in LA is cheap. Maybe if you get a place in Sacramento. I think the best thing to do is to buy a weekend NYTimes and a weekend LATimes from your local Borders and scour the real estate ads. You'll have your eyes opened!
But you can find cheap housing in either city - but I promise you that it won't be pretty! You can always look for sublets and give things a try, though.
Housing in LA is definitely cheaper than NYC. I have friends who have lived both places, and those who live in LA now have a much better quality of life for less money than I do here in NYC, or than they did when they lived here.
Sure, cheapER, but a decent place in LA is no bargain compared to most places in the US (other than San Francisco)... but I'm just in a picky mood today, so I'll lay off the caffeine and shut up for a bit.
Yes, BT, I thought we were only comparing NY and LA in this thread.
First, I would work on spelling and grammar. When used properly, it can really improve your resumé and help with your skills as an office temp, which will most likely be paying your rent before any acting gigs.
Ah Mister Matt, that is very true. As opposed to Matt_G who is really Kristin Chenoweth and who truly did just step off the bus from Littletown USA and land on Broadway, it isn't likely that a newcomer to the city will make his or her dreams come true without a more mundane start. Polish that resume and get the typing skills up to snuff. Not that there is anything wrong with that - we've all been there. Just being in NYC is great - you have access to so much, so it is worth being there at almost any cost. There, the caffeine has worn off and I'm not so bitchy anymore.
Please correct the "e" in "moveing" for the thread title. I kid you not, I wince every time I see it. (At least with the New York and California flub, I can pretend you meant the states.)
Hope everything works out for ya, no matter where you go. (Hope it's NYC. )
If you are interested in working in theater - don't bother with Los Angeles (theater is dead in this city). You can still find really cheap places in live in LA that aren't dumps. It's a good place to start in commercial work.

No, california is not a city.
LA is a city, however--and it is a wasteland for stage acting. No, really. It's where theatre goes to die.

I do better at spelling and writting when I'm wide awake. With out coffee I'm half asleep lol.
Dear tFAn, as Type_A_Tiff suggested, you may wish to back into your very first message and edit it to fix the spelling of moving. It will then look all nice and neat on the message board list. We broadway fans are a picky bunch, I know, but accuracy is important.
Sorry to bump this thread for no good reason, but thank you for editing the title, tFan. My migrane's going away now. :) I wasn't trying to be a bitch - spelling mistakes really do kill me. (Not that I'm perfect.) I must stop this OCD - time to get back onto Paxil!
And LA theatre's not that bad, is it? I mean, there are some Broadway shows that find success there, right? silence (How did The Producers do?)
