Posted: 8/20/04 at 12:13amIt totally depends on what type of work you're doing. I'm assuming you're a stage actor, correct?

"I know that. I'm a Californian."
I wasn't correcting you. By the time I'd started my reply, I didn't realize you already had.

If it's acting, find a street to sleep on.
Honestly, it's going to be a LOT harder then "I want to be an actor so I'll move to New York!" A LOT harder, especially if there's no back up plan.

Oops! Sorry Musetta!
And tFan, I hate to say it, but listen to LG. She knows what she's talking about.
edit: when I say LG, in this case I am refering to The Lady.

Delph, actually Ebb-Kander knows what they're talking about.
Edited to say: Oops, I'm stupid. I thought you were referring to Long Island Girl, not Lady G. Listen to both LGs. They're both right. (And thank you for getting that song stuck in my head...)

Posted: 8/20/04 at 12:42amI don't know about Los Angeles, but I know that if you should really give a LOT of thought before moving to New York to be an actress. We're talking cut-throat competition, with the probability that you won't find work.

Posted: 8/20/04 at 12:45amI recommend reading "Making It on Broadway". It's an interesting, informative book that makes me think I would never cut it as a Broadway actress. It very well may help you make a decision.

Posted: 8/20/04 at 12:45amI think NYC has a better standard of living (if more costlier) than LA. There's so much more culture, things to do, better restaurants, events, and of course Broadway. I'd kill to live in NYC some day. LA's too...too...it's too homogenized, if that makes any sense at all.

Posted: 8/20/04 at 12:48amI would love to live in NYC, but the cost of living is stupendous. I don't know how people afford it. I don't know about LA.

It was very easy for me to become an actor. I showed up in Manhattan, stepped off the bus with nothing but my talent and the clothes on my back. I walked into an agents office and he signed me right away.
Yes, friends. I am Kristin Chenoweth.

Posted: 8/20/04 at 12:50amSide note: Out of curiousity, how much is rent for say, a one-bedroom apt in Manhattan? (I know it's different for midtown, Harlem, etc. I just want an idea.)

One with or without a window?
(Honestly, it varies.) I've seen some for 800- 1500.
#22re: I'm planning on moveing to either New York or California
Posted: 8/20/04 at 12:56am1 Bedroom in Manhattan? That would range from 1200-6000 per month.
#23re: I'm planning on moveing to either New York or California
Posted: 8/20/04 at 12:58amJesus Christ! US$1200? (Good god, changed into Cdn currency, I could buy a house in Newfoundland for that!) Is that price for the dinkiest dump in Manhattan?

Posted: 8/20/04 at 1:02amNow why would anyone pay that for a room in Manhattan? How much is rent in the buroughs? If Queens and Brooklyn are a lot cheaper, and Manhattan is only a subway ride away, why don't struggling actors move there? Reading "Making It On Broadway", I found it really strange how new actors have to live near Times Square.
