It's probably somewhere in Christopher Isherwood's book, The Berlin Stories, Foanatic. I'm going to read it soon, so I'll be sure to check.

It's a good book, but it definately has dry spots.

SPOILER -- but apparently an explanation is needed

The "costume" at the end of the Mendes version of Cabaret is what was worn by people in concentration camps. See the link below for more information.
