Okay...
I am venturing into NYC on Friday, to perhaps Footlight Records, Tower, wherever, to find a recording of this show. I've no idea how many there are, all I know is that the production had a long run in Austria or something like that (Titled "Tanz der Vampire"?). Can someone tell me A. How many recordings there are availible, how much can I be looking at spending etc, does one have Steve Barton on it, and so on.
Also, did they ever use click tracks in the Broadway show? Sounds like Braver than We are and Carpe Noctem were play along tunes that the orchestra performed with. Also... have any vocal arrangements been released? I feel so out of touch and usually I know all this stuff but it's been a busy year. Thanks all!

I'm not an expert.
Unfortunately, to my knowledge, there never has been a legal copy of the music from the American version DOTV. And, no, I can't help you with anything other than legal copies. You might be able to still download some of the music from the show website:

I believe there is a CD of the German/European version and have seen it from time to time up for sale on E-bay. As I don’t speak German, I have never purchased it.
I have no clue regarding sheet music. Again, I believe I saw some up for sale on E-bay at one time but other than that, I can’t help you. I found well over 10 pages on the show when I just tried a Google search. You might try that.
I personally liked the music and the show. I believe it got a bum rap but that’s just IMHO. That and a buck fifty might buy you a small cup of java at StarBucks. Anyway, it's all blood under the bridge now.
Sorry I wasn't more help. Good luck on your search.

Not an expert but I sayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
They are releasing a new highlights version from the German production on 9/21.
There were click tracks but they were vocal not musical. There is no sheet music but you can find them every now and then on Ebay. The only souvineer program can be found at the Michael Crawford Fan website.
Hope this helps.

There is a complete double-CD as well as a highlights CD of the Austrian production available at Footlight as imports.
Tanz der Vampire CD
And Steve Barton does indeed sing the lead on the German-language (Austrian) recording.

The English language demo is not for sale - it was recorded with a different cast before the Broadway production was cast and produced. It is still floating around on e-bay etc...where it can be sold since it is not a bootleg but a demo sent out to potential investors, etc. (and the people on it were paid for their performances).
After the show opened, as the die-hard fans can attest, there were some bootlegs (audio and video) floating around. All these bootlegs of the Broadway production have long since been removed from all sites offering them with the threat of legal action - and if they pop up again, they are removed again.

all that i know about this show is that my favorite theater actress of all time, sara schmidt, was in it
BTW, Aris Sas, who was Alfred in the original Vienna production (and sings on the English demo with his very irrisistably adorable, faint Viennese accent), will be Bobby in Urinetown in Germany.
Aka "Pinkelstadt." :)

When the topic of TANZ DER VAMPIRE is raized, you come to me!
My name here and Tanz are synonymous... blood-brothers...
It's just the way it is
Steinman is my god and I must serve him in the best way possible. Any more questions, PM me
Tanz Der Vampire is a glorious musical possessing the finest qualities of serious musical theatre. Unfortunately Michael Crawford saw fit to kill that. It has a lush and melodic score and Steve Barton (Rest In peace) is one of musical theatres greatest young losses.

Actually, it is possible to love both versions. The beautiful and serious European original...and the campy guilty pleasure on Broadway. Totally different shows...lovable for totally different reasons.

I agree IssaMe! They are both great. Btw... If you are interested in the Tanz recording, I recommend the 2 CD recording. I got it in a little cd store in Heidelberg, and it was the best 20 Euros I've ever spent... Woo for TDV/DOTV!
Thanks for all the help folks.
I must admit that I am quite surprised. I knew that the Austrian version was the "serious" version, but listening to it, it comes across as a wee bit on the comedic side. The vocal inflections and deliveries made me think that perhaps, this was a comedic version, albeit, a better one than the Broadway version. And the music is sooo different as well. Only Carpe Noctem stands out as a tune that wasn't changed really at all.
Steve Barton's performance is sensational! Saw him in Phantom and miss him terribly.
One last nagging question; where can I find the complete libretto if such a thing exists? Not to mention a synopsis, since the Austrian version is different.

Way back when, occasionally copies of the libretto would appear on ebay (Broadway version, not European)...but don't think lately.
Meanwhile, the official Michael Crawford fan club put together a wonderful souvenir program for DOTV (Broadway) - when one was never done by the show itself. It is available from their website...see address below :

I did an English translation (not a direct one, but with my OWN lyrics) and if you want to see that, you are most welcome :)

BTW, the DOTV souvenir program is being sold at today's Broadway Flea Market at the Michael Crawford Fan Club table.
Thanks gang! I would love links to your sites. Please feel free to email me privately or send a link. And thanks for the Michael Crawford link, I had a friend (whom I've lost touch with) in the ensemble for DOTV. Maybe I will get that program.
I had hoped to go to the Flea Market today but alas, I will be in a theatre "Jeyklling and Hyding" today...have a great time all who are going. :)
