IF AND OF ITSELF - Daryl Roth Theatre

I just saw a performance of IF AND OF ITSELF this weekend, having had no previous knowledge of the show at all, and I have to say it was one of the most strangely entertaining and oddly compelling off-broadway show I had seen in a long time.

It bills itself as a magic-ish show, but really reminds me more of PRIVACY with Daniel Radcliffe at The Public last year. Kind of like a very cool Ted Talk. I don't want to ruin any of the surprises, so I won't go too into detail, but I left the theater completely amazed (and I am a very cynical theatre-goer).

I promise I am in no way involved in the show - I have just always found these boards to be a cool resource for what shows to see and wanted to pay it forward. Its not the cheapest ticket, but definitely try and check it out if you can.

Going 10/22. Was intrigued when I read the Times piece about other magicians getting busted for trying to film the show/steal secrets.

Also, being produced by NPH and directed by Frank Oz got my attention.

I've been meaning to see this, but I have to say, your comparison to Privacy really lessened my interest. I thought Privacy was pretty bad. How similar is it to Privacy, would you say?

HA, sorry. What I meant was more that it has a 'story' do it, but is really primarily more about the illusions / tricks / OH SH*T HOW DO THEY DO THAT moments than the story telling elements. You'll get into it more than PRIVACY's 'and that, audience, is why you should xyz abc" heavy-handedness

I saw it a few weeks ago and was pretty disappointed, to be honest. I didn't get much out of it. Yeah, the tricks were cool. But the material itself is very sparse. There's a general theme, yes, but not a clear message, and all the stories and monologues don't really add up to something meaningful. It also moves incredibly slowly--I think over the course of the show he did maybe 6 or 7 tricks total.
