#0IF revival of EVITA who would you cast!?

I saw a national tour not too long ago of Evita with Raul Esparza that was supposed to make it to broadway.
If the show had a revival on bdway who'd you pick?
EVITA - Alice Ripley (right, she isn't Spanish, but Patti and Elaine weren't either...and Alice can sing the HELL outta the score. Did anyone see her sing "rainbow High" for a benfit??)
CHE - Raul Esparza not Antonio Banderas, lol
PERON - Raymond Trujillo (he did the tour), or Chuck Wagner, Rob Evan (someone with large physical stature)
MISTRESS - Jessica Grove, or some young up and coming actress...
what do u guys think...?

I would NOT cast Madonna as Evita. That's as far as I've gotten so far. :)

Julia Murney's AWESOME, but I think she's better suited for Funny Girl Fanny Brice!!

Mrs B, you hit it right on the head. Julia Murney would be a fabulous Evita--just listen to the Lippa version of The Wild Party and you will have all the proof you need.
Raul played Che on the tour, didn't he? I think he'd be fantastic, too.
I figured all the die hards weren't too keen on Antonio's Che, but I liked him a lot, so I wouldn't mind seeing him do it either. ![]()
For Mistress, I'm thinking Natascia Diaz, though she might be too old. Lots of the Millie ladies would do a great job, too (i.e. Jessica Grove, Catherine Brunell--though she might also be too old, Megan Sikora, Joyce Chittick).

Posted: 6/27/03 at 6:22pmIn re: Madonna as Evita, I enjoyed her performance. I feel that it was truly her role of a lifetime and she worked her butt off to do it justice, and in my opinion she did a good job. Yes, she can't sing the score in the original key, but there are precious few who can without killing themselves.

Posted: 6/27/03 at 7:21pmWhat's wrong with Patti LuPone? She could still pull the part off and put to shame all others.

I wasn't being critical of Madonna's singing. I simply don't like her as an actor. She's just not believable, to me.

Let's see (I've been thinking a lot about a revival of Evita lately)...
On Ripley and Murney as Eva...judging by albums, I'd have to go with Murney. You must remember - Eva has to be young (she died at all of 33!). I can't really think of many others who'd really be right for the part.
Raul Esparza as Che. But you'd have to give him the movie version of "The Lady's Got Potential" to sing. That said, there's no one else who could do it right now.
Peron...no idea.
What about Philip Hernandez as Magaldi? He's got a great singing voice, and he was excellent in Les Miz (he played Javert until a few months before closing).
Totally agree with Jessica Grové as the Mistress. Then again, I agree with her as anything...but I'm biased toward lovely women. ![]()
Anyway, I must say: any revival should abandon the Hal Prince staging entirely, reconceive it from the ground up, and definitely bring out the rock sound that is present on the concept album and in the film. Ditch the rather dull "Art of the Possible" for the film's "The Lady's Got Potential." As for physical production, I have a vision involving lots of translucent scrim and a large, mobile staircase...

EVITA probably ranks with GYPSY as one of the most sought after female leads in musical theatre.
Even Lea Salonga has often said that this is her dream role on stage.
And a long time ago - right after his Broadway stint in ASPEECTS OF LOVE, Michael Ball auditioned for the role of Che Guevara in the movie version ( long before they ever thought of Antonio Banderas).
Are there any definite plans to re-stage it?

I would like to see Marin Mazzie or Rachel York as Evita!
For Peron, I could see Pierce Bronson (sp)

Neither was the real Evita.

Posted: 6/30/03 at 1:45ammy picks foe eva would be alice ripley she woudld belt the crap out of the score!!!! donna murphy, carle carmelo, marin mazzie, and wishful thinking audra mcdonal :) (she played eva when she was in school, i bet she was awsome!!)

Posted: 6/30/03 at 2:58amRebecca Luker doesn't have the power the role demands both vocally or presence-wise. I think Marin, Julia Murney, or maybe even Sheri Rene Scott could do the role wonderfully!

Musetta 1957 you're right, she's Argentinian, but the last touring cast that came around were all actors with some spanish, or latin descent, and all sang with accents. So that's what I meant. ![]()

I can see Ripley or Carolee.
Caren Lyn Manuel, a former RENT swing and Mimi/Maureen understudy played Evita in Europe. I think she would be good. perhaps as a stand-by.
