I'm not good at writing reviews, so I apologize in advance. Anyway, here goes:
I saw the today's (10/5) matinee performance with 7 of my friends. The show definitely wasn't as bad as I was expecting. There were some issues with the book, but other than that I found the show to be decent. Was it " I LOVE IT FANTASTIC!!!"? No. Would I see it again? Absolutely not. I still found the show likeable.
First of all, you can't fault the cast for the book. The entire cast is very talented. The show opens with Chiara Navarra singing "Life Turns On A dIme." The girl has got a great voice. Jessica Boevers and Christopher J. Hanke are fantastic as well. I thought Christopher handled his part very well, especially since I imagine it's a bit more difficult to play a man with Tourette's, than to play just an ordinary man. Jessica is a bit overexcited, but she's very believable, and she sings beautifully.
David Turner, although he has a sketchy character (Winston), still manages to pull it off. He reminds me a bit of Alan Cumming when he's in costume. Michael J. Farina is funny as Al, even though he mostly sings jingles ("Volkswagen," "The Dr. Pepper Song"). He sounds nice on "Not This Day."
For the most part, I enjoyed the music. There were a couple of songs that I didn't particularly like. I really didn't like "Secrets." That song was really stupid, and it just bugged me. Since I got the CD sampler,I haven't liked "I Am My Mother's Son." tHat hasn't changed. While I like the idea of the song, the song itself just doesn't work for me.
There were a few of the songs that I liked more than others. I like the title song, but I also like "What A Strange Life We Live," (All 3 times!), "Life Turns on a Dime," and "A Ride on the Wheel." I also really liked Liz's song "Sempre Mio Rimani."
I also understand the significance of all of the lemons now.
So, to end all of that, "In My Life" is not as bad as it seems at first. While it doesn't have the greatest book, the songs are nice and the cast is really talented.
Id give the show a 2.5 out of 5.
