Ok, I know it has been discussed A LOT, but I think it wasn' t final up till now. But today, The Digital Bits website, which is almost never wrong about releases says
" Okay... back to those announcements. First up, Sony has set Rent for release on 2/21."
So, I guess we can put the rumors to rest. It's coming very soon !!!

Part of it is to combat piracy (China comes to mind) I believe WB fairly recently (within the last 6 or so months) released a movie on dvd in China the same day they released it to the theaters here in the states.
Oooh, I'll be able to watch it before I go to NYC...Yippee!!!

I'm not sure how I feel about the ever-closing gap between theater release and DVD release, but I do know I can't wait for this DVD!

Posted: 12/23/05 at 3:14ameslgr8, that's what I was thinking, it is way too early for Brokeback. But The Digital Bits website is really trustworthy and they have a lot of connections in the industry. They also have a "Rumor Mill" page, where they mention releases for which nothing is definite yet. But the "Brokeback" date was on the main page along with RENT, which means it was confirmed !

Hmmm. I, too, am a bit disturbed by the quick turnaround these days... but that's show business. It'll be nice to have Rent sooner rather than later, but wow that's fast.
And I know I'll get to see Rent at least ONCE more, hopefully... we have two second-run movie houses within 10 minutes of my house and I'm assuming since they get everything else, they'll get Rent. *knocks on wood*

The reason studios are releasing their films earlier and earlier on dvd now is because that's where they make the majority of their money. Box office receipts are less important now than they used to be and studios want to get these films out for sale while they are still (semi) fresh in people's minds. The first week of a dvd release can see 4-5 times the profits that the movie made it's entire run in the theatre.
When movies were released only on vhs it would take 6-8 months from the opening date in the theatre to be released on video and the retail price was anywhere from $90-110 each. But after seeing the kind of numbers they got from a $16 dvd it just made sense to get them out as soon as possible.

Posted: 12/23/05 at 10:52amWell, you know the boots of Rent are all over China Town. The little women selling movies just kept repeating "RENT? RENT?" as we walked by. They are probably trying to cut down on some of that. You know, why pay $5 for a boot when the real thing will be out soon?
