Ideas for first Broadway experience?

I actually was thinking of A Chorus Line, for what it represents, but it seems that the current cast is less than stellar. They want to see Spring Awakening, but I didn't know if it would be to overwhelming.

Personally, I'd take them to a show that is familiar (music or plot wise). So I'd suggest:
Lion King
Mary Poppins
Legally Blonde
*Not Little Mermaid-too many mixed reviews
If they really want to hop onto the theatre band wagon:
Wicked
Rent
Just my two cents.

I'm all about Curtains. It would be a great first show. And all the performances and dancing are top-notch.

I really depends on your friends. My first thought was ACL, unless it has really slipped from when I saw it a year ago. Safe bets are Hairspray and Ave. Q. I think Xanadu is not a good choice....it could be fun, but for a good exhibit of what good Broadsway can be...it's just too slight and slapdash (so shoot me).
Although I haven't seen them, I imagine the Disney shows are full of antsy children in the audience...maybe not the best first B'way experience.
Despite a lot of the negative feelings on this board, unless I had reason to believe my friends' tatses lay elsewhere, I would choose Spring Awakening. (So shoot me again.) Everyone I know personally has liked it immensely. A little bit of a gamble, but any show will be.

I agree with almost everything gymdudeva says..don't agree with the Spring Awakening.
I saw ACL tonight, I thought it was amazing.

I fell asleep during Wicked (left during intermission) and POTO! Just a heads up. I would do Hairspray, 90% of the people who see it LOVE it. And it's pretty clean.
I would say no to Gypsy. Not everyone like Patti. She's a taste you have to acquire, IMO.
