I'll take the BWW Unpopular Road here and say Idina deserved the Tony that year. Over everyone else. She helped create and introduce an iconic role in American Musical Theatre. She did it beautifully, and it resonated with audiences far beyond that of any show in the past decade (or more).

That's why she won. And she deserved it.

As for the Olivier Award, a different scenario, different year, and different competition.

The caliber of musicals (and, frankly, the sheer amount of new shows/revivals opening season) made it extremely difficult to score a nomination. And, as the general consensus on this thread has said, she was just outshone by the other nominees. I was lucky enough to see the five performances that were nominated that season as well as Idina's and the nominations were well deserved and frankly went to the right people.
