I'll take the BWW Unpopular Road here and say Idina deserved the Tony that year. Over everyone else. She helped create and introduce an iconic role in American Musical Theatre. She did it beautifully, and it resonated with audiences far beyond that of any show in the past decade (or more).
That's why she won. And she deserved it.
As for the Olivier Award, a different scenario, different year, and different competition.
"Jaws is the Citizen Kane of movies."
