re: Idina Menzel

Yes i think she is great also.... she rocks.

But can we really watch our use of the word "idol"

re: Idina Menzel

Another sock puppet...

re: Idina Menzel

Why watch the use of the word "idol"? If she looks up to Menzel and aspires to be like her, than Menzel is her idol. Better her than Britney Spears or something.

re: Idina Menzel

While I'm not the biggest Wicked fan in the world, I'll have to agree that I found Eden's performance to be better than Idina's.
And hang on, when did you win the discus?

re: Idina Menzel

shes my idol too and im proud to show it!! How can someone think Eden is better than Idina?? I mean its Idina's part, no one does it better than the original and she IS the original Elphaba-of course you all know that but i dont think anyone could play the part better than Idina. Wouldnt u think it gets hard doing that part 8 times a week??? singing her lungs out THAT much-of course she isnt at her best ALL the time but wouldnt u think so?

re: Idina Menzel

Just because someone is first doesn't mean they are the best.

Idina is fine and dandy, but I am sure that certain current stand-bys who I will not mention can play scenes without having o YELL every line after nessa bites teh dust and can sing the score without resorting tos creeching and yelling..

re: Idina Menzel

well.....what do u expect?? shes playing a witch lol.i read her bio and she said when she was young and sang her vocal teacher said she was screaming so much that she didnt want her to hurt herself!! lol i understand that but i still think shes the BEST

re: Idina Menzel

um.... the whoel point of Wicked is that she's not. and screeming every line does NOta good actress make.
#34

re: Idina Menzel

i agree broadwayguy. i mean yes idina is a greta elphaba- but lile- have you seen the show with Eden or Sho in it? if you havent, you cant say that they arent worthy of the part- which both of them are.
#35

re: Idina Menzel

you dont have to scream to get the point across- sometimes it is better to have a low intensity to your voice, which i have heard none of from Idina

re: Idina Menzel

idina has no subtely in action, expression, or voice. she over plays everything. Yes, the gershwin is a big house, but that is no reason to over do it.

re: Idina Menzel

When comparing Elphabas, keep this in mind:

Idina helped CREATE the role in SEVERAL workshops and in rehearsals for both San Francisco and New York. How she played the part most likely led both Stephen and Winnie to write the show the way they did. Adlibs of Idina's in early workshops might have made it into the script. Riffs of Idina's might have made it into the score. And a lot of the staging and gestures most likely came from Idina's instincts. On top of all that, the whole CONCEPT of how one PLAYS Elphaba (a role never before seen on stage) was discovered and created by Idina.

So for the rest of time, whenever you see ANYONE play Elphaba, you must give credit to Idina. Part of what Eden, Shoshana, and all future Elphabas do was INVENTED by Idina and will forever be Idina's.

re: Idina Menzel

The Wright brother's invented the airplane, but the people that came after them one uped them in every way.
#39

re: Idina Menzel

Perfect example. The Wright Brothers did the MUCH MORE difficult part which was getting it to work in the first place and all of the people who one upped them had to USE THE WRIGHT BROTHERS most basic concepts (wings, etc) in order to do their work.

re: Idina Menzel

I agree with both SPEED and BroadwayGuy2. Idina created the role of Elphaba just as the Wright Brothers invinted the airplane. Hence, both Idina and the Wright Brothers will be remembered for their creation. However, it is nice and appropriate to acknowledge those who followed and were equally as good if not better.

Tank you TGIF! I never mean to say Idina should be ignored or anything or thats he didn't doa nything, she originated tehr ole. But SOME people have to realize that other people can and WILL (and HAVE DONE already!!!!!) do it better.

re: Idina Menzel

Idina is great, love her as Elphie, and don't think she will ever be topped. Her cd "Here" is excellent. Wish it was a little longer though!!

re: Idina Menzel

I've heard all of them, and I think we must face a simple, but undeniable fact:

Nobody's perfect.

Idina has her faults, Eden has her faults, Kristy has her faults, and certainly so does Shoshana.

However, their respective voices and talents overcome any small (or large, depending on your view) snags in their performances otherwise. There is no flawless performer, no matter how much we may believe otherwise.

But let us enjoy the performances anyway, and not just go purely for the joy of negative critique.

re: Idina Menzel

SPEED--u are SO right! The handmovents and everything were created by Idina-like in The Wizard and I- (and i know all the handmovements)

Its just not easy for me (being a HUGE Wicked/Idina fan) to say that someone else could do it better than Idina when Idina actually created it-Same with Kristin Chenoweth. Jennifer Laura Thompson is good but not the same as Kristin-like in POPULAR, if u seen it with Kristin you expect Jennifer to do the same exact thing but its different.
