yes, that's what i was going to say. at the zipper concert, idina said she would never be casted as maria in west side story because she "isn't a soprano anymore". but she was a soprano in her high school choir and she was trained classically soprano.

I own the RENT cast recording. That also took some getting used to for me. Her voice sounds so much more fuller now (in Wicked) than it does in RENT. Is that just me?

Sargar~ Is your avatar from when RENT first came out? Was that a real Newsweek?

Is it usual for that (losing soprano voice) to happen? I know old people lose their higher notes, but Idina isn't THAT old.

well it could probably be due to not really using her soprano voice that much...she's probably out of practice. Plus (and I don't know if she does) smoking can make you lose your range very quickly.

Yup, that was a real newsweek from 1996...I wish I had a copy of it, but i'll just settle for the cover!

That would be horrible if she smokes! I can't stand it when talented people ruin themselves like that. If she does smoke, I might lose a lot of respect for her.

I ordered Still I Can't Be Still on CDBaby, along with Matt Caplan's CD and Look Around, and at least one thing was backordered (probably Still I Can't Be Still) but they expect it in soon. I have Here, and like it, plus I like what I've heard of SICBS)

So I've always wanted to buy one of her cd's. Which one should I buy first? Here or Still I can't be Still?? Never heard her solo album before so pick the right one!

that really surprises me. . .that u can lose your range just like that and "no longer be a soprano". huh. .. im not a singer so i don't know about stuff like that.

newayz. . .as to her cds, i really like Here. Im into acoustic guitar. at first it was a surprise to here her sing like that after but i got used to it. My favorite songs are "here" and "you'd be surprised". I think someone also said this, but i love to listen to it b4 i got to bed, its relaxing. i haven't heard ne of the songs from "still i can't be still" and i've been looking for a copy from cd stores in the area, but no luck. its really hard to find online also.

i only have Here. It's very mellow and i like it. I would recommend it to any dancer for a modern/lyrical piece lol.
I want to get Still I cant be still, but i just havn't gotten around to getting it. I like her more upbeat songs and such.

A dancer might dream to see her name in lights and mean it, but all she really dreams is to make someone else feel the way she did when she first saw a dancer. And that is so beautiful-Anonymous

i agree. they really are SO different. she made them years apart, and her personality changed a lot. on cd baby, they have 2 minute clips of all her songs (i listened to these daily till my cds came, lol) and you can get more of a feeling of which one you like better that way.

i don't think she just "lost" her soprano voice. i don't sing, so i'm not an expert, but i'm sure her training has a lot to do with it. i don't think she had a singing teacher during rent (correct me if i'm wrong). she is (was as of 1/9) definitely training a lot stricter now to get through a leading part 8 times a week, and as she is getting older she needs to keep her vocal muscles strong.

She probably didn't lose it she probably just needs to work on it again and be retrained.

EXACTLY. it's all in the training.

oh, and speaking of smoking, has anyone heard daphne rubin-vega sing lately? she's TOTALLY lost her voice. too much incorrect belting and SMOKING.

Im surprised nobody has mentioned the song "Penny" on her cd HERE. Its one of my favorites. I can play it on my guitar :)
Is anyone else in love with "Heart On My Sleeve" from Still Can't be Still?? That song is SO pretty!

No one's answered my question. If I can only buy one- which one?

I don't know its a really hard choice. It kind of depends on what kind of music you like because they are COMPLETLY different. hmm lets see if you like "Im Not That Girl Better" then get Here and if you lik e"Over the Moon" more get Still Cant Be Still. I don't know. haha

Good analogy thanks. I may just base it on that.

I have to say I think Idina's best music is stuff she has yet to record. I've heard some other songs from gigs (Jealous, Just Kidding, Winter, Summer's Grace, All Hail the Queen, Only Hurts When I Breathe, etc) and I think those are better than both of her two cds.

As for which CD I like more. I like all the songs on Here but am not absolutely crazy for any. There are afew songs I really love on Still I Can't Be Still but I don't listen to the rest of the cd. The way I compare them is Here is what I would listen to while trying to fall asleep and Still I Can't Be Still is what I would listen to while working out.

Letty~I love Penny too! and Heart on my Sleeve.
Ashley~ It is a really tough decision to make. Idina's voice sounds much prettier and mellower in Here, but I also really like most of the songs in Still. Her lyrics are just amazing, especially in Still. I would really try to get both. Here is $12 I think and Still was $20 something from Colony. Do you have a bday coming up? If you want to hear pretty-Idina-voice, get Here, I just listened to it again and realized how much I love it!. If you are more into louder, more "over the Moon" type stuff, get Still. But eventually get both!

ashley - try listening to the clips of her songs on the cd baby website. you could make a pretty accurate decision with that - they give you 2 minutes of each song.

"Penny"'s my JAM lol...it's just so much of every girl out there...just kind of a "no, I don't know what I'm doing, but it's ok" kind of song.

I have both of her CDs, and I love them both, it just depends on what mood I'm in. If I'm in a mellow, acoustic, "I wanna put on music and chill" kind of mood, then I put on Here. If I'm in a more different, edgy kind of mood, then I put on SICBS. They're both very different from her Broadway voice, and I like that. If I wanted to hear her Broadway voice all the time, I wouldn't have paid for the solo stuff.
