Yes, I know. Very fangirly, but these are the shows I like. Please, no attacks.
Jackson - they are technically not musicals. They are through-sung.
JOEKV - would you like to explain what a Through-Sung is? Working in the field of theatre and music for over 20 years, I have no doubt what I said was correct. Please enlighten me. I would love it!
My absolute favouritest thing for today is people who say they're putting their list in alphabetical order, then fail at alphabetical order.
Don't feel bad because I'm laughing at you; feel proud because this is the first day in the LONGEST time that Freddy Rodriguez has been relegated to second absolute favouritest thing, at least for a day. ^_^

Why bother TooDarnHot, you know it all.
And when you cut-n-paste a post right out of Wikipedia, at least have the decency to link it.
Alphabetical order:
Follies
Gypsy
My Fair Lady
South Pacific
Sweeney Todd
I didn't, dear.
let's not get juvenile here. You clearly claim that I'm incorrect so I would love to see what you think a Through-Sung is...
no? nothing?

That's a very hard one to answer. There are a ton of really excellent ones. I'd say Sweeny Todd is definately up there, with Gypsy. And yes, I too love Spring Awakening. Watcha gonna do about it?
That explanation of sung-through musicals had some really hideous spelling errors. "Speaken" word?
Ragtime has dialogue.
Phantom of the Opera
Gypsy
Les Miserables
And then for four or five, I don't know what I'd pick. Either: The Producers (not a fan myself!), Sunset BLVD. (for what it was!), EVITA, South Pacific, A Chorus Line, or Sunday in the Park with George.

Well let's see...here's your (Wikipedia) definition:
if you wanted to be technical, MTF3's list is basically made up of Through-Songs. NOT "Musicals"
Through-Songs are shows (some consider them contemporary operas) with no structured book or speaken word. Dialouge is sung through reoccuring motifs and classical reciatatives.
First off, as everyone has pointed out, a musical (even a "Sung through" one) has a book. Even an opera has a book, too. it's the plot, the story, the basic structure of the piece. Even if no dialogue is spoken, there is a book.
Second, his list contains show that aren't even sung through- Ragtime for example.
Thirdly, a show is still a "Musical" even if "sung through." That's why shows like Phantom of the Opera bill themselves as "The Musical" or, oddly, "A New Musical" even 20 odd years later.
Oh I could go on but why bother. The kid asked an interesting question for once. Why not cut him a little slack?

Clearly I didn't convey what I was trying to explain so just forget it.
And the whole Through-Sung post was in reaction to someone else, not MTF3's original post.
Anyway... it doesn't matter.
I love Wicked, Phantom, Les Mes, Follies, Rent, Spring Awakening, and Joseph. Yeah, I know that's six, oh well... I could keep going forever haha.
West Side Story
Gypsy
My Fair Lady
Sweeney Todd
Cabaret
And just because it's so hard to narrow it down to only five:

Oh, I'm sorry "dear" I can't imagine how I got confused, maybe it was where you said "if you wanted to be technical, MTF3's list is basically made up of Through-Songs. NOT "Musicals" "
I'd assume when you said "MTF3" you meant the original poster, who goes by the nickname Musical Theater Fan 3. I must have got mixed up there. Oh well, moving on....
Ladies, please! You are embarrassing yourselves.

Sally, the proper bitchy put down at a moment like this is "Girls, please! You're BOTH pretty!"
1) Gypsy
2) Follies
3) Grey Gardens
4) Sunday in the Park with George
5) She Loves Me
Not a single flaw in any, Follies, Grey Gardens and Sunday... are controversial among fans, but I don't think anyone can say Gypsy and She Loves Me are not perfect. They'd be lying.

I actually love The Wedding Singer. Not sure why it gets slammed so much.
I'm shocked there was not one mention of Show Boat without which none of the other musicals may have occurred. The show is still stunning after all this time. I think A Chorus Line and Oklahoma would also have to be on the list.

probably because it was terrible. Truly an awful musical. Painful to sit through.
wait, jackson, PLEASE tell me you didn't say that phantom of the opera was an OPERA...
and no one has been mean to you in this thread, so don't say sweeney is a horrible musical, happens to be one of my favorites
