If/then vs. Violet — Page 2

I don't know Violet so apologies if this sounds silly but doesn't the lead have a disfigured face? It's probably more plausible that guys would be throwing themselves at Idina Menzel's Elizabeth - she's hot, funny and intelligent.

the character does (though it is not illustrated literally with the use of makeup), but the attraction to her is precisely the theme of the show. The way it is presented is plausible because it's not quite so simplistic as "two guys fall for a disfigured girl".

Interestingly enough, I thought Violet was WORLDS better than If/Then. Like day-and-night better. I thought Idina Menzel's performance was incredibly amateurish. I felt like she was acting her scenes well, but as soon as it came time to sing all her acting choices became parallel gestures and obvious choices. Honestly, the only performances I thoroughly enjoyed were the soldier's and the assistant's. It felt like the follow up to Rent after Disney's gentrification of NYC as produced by Ryan Murphy. Surely, I can't be the only one who feels this way. Anyone else out there?

Violet on the other hand: while I admit I had a soft spot for this show and it's music before going in, Sutton Foster is undeniably showing us she is capable of playing a role with some true emotional depth to it and Josh Henry sings BEAUTIFULLY. And Colin Donnell...well, he doesn't just look great in that uniform.

Comden Green mentioned that he didn't buy two men could be fighting over Violet shortly after meeting her. Bettyboy72 responded surprised because Comden Green seemed to think the two men falling over Elizabeth in If/Then was not plausible given how "dour" and "self-involved" Elizabeth is.

I responded that the major difference between Violet and Elizabeth is that while Elizabeth is hot, Violet is disfigured. so it is more plausible to me that men could be throwing themselves over Elizabeth and not Violet. Now, obviously Sutton Foster is not disfigured or (arguably) ugly. But this isn't about her, it's about the character she is playing. In the eyes of the other characters in Violet, Sutton Foster's character is disfigured. How Sutton Foster actually looks doesn't matter. Clearly they are going for an (interesting) artistic choice not to visually represent her disfigurement. Is this clearer?
