Hi All,

I will be in NYC for one night in December, and bringing my boyfriend, who has never been to the city, and the broadway district. I am having a tough time deciding between Shrek, and Billy Elliot. Any thoughts?

Definitley BILLY ELLIOT. SHREK is kinda a toss-up in terms of whether or not it's worth seeing (the out of town reviews are mixed...) and BILLY ELLIOT is coming straight from a hugely succesful, incredibly well-recieved run in England and at this point is probably the show to beat for Best Musical at next years Tonys. BILLY ELLIOT is definitley the more solid choice.

(Now I'm waiting to be attacked for about five things I said.)

Billy Elliot!

But I'd also like to chime in a vote for A Tale of Two Cities.

After watching Billy Elliot, you'd probably feel more "satisfied." Inspiring and funny and it'll be amazing to see those young talented kids.

The OP wasn't asking if they should see Tale of Two Cities or Gypsy. They were asking about two shows and which one to see between the two. They weren't looking for a list of shows to see.

That being said, I would go for Billy Elliot.

Thanks all for the suggestions. While I myself would love to see Gypsy, I'm in the city often enough, I can go back to see it. This is about my boyfriends birthday, and these are his two choices!

Billy is amazing, and if you want tickets to that, you should get them sooner rather than later. As for Shrek, at least wait for the Seattle reviews before you plunk down hard earned cash. As for people trying to shill you into wasting money on Tale of Two Cities, run don't walk, as fast as you can, in the other direction.

BILLY ELLIOT sucks huge gigantic balls. I wanted to walk out when I saw it in London, in 2006. I am amazed at the hype and appeal.... many of these posters are just following the zombie buzz that automatically titles it as a future Tony award winner. They have no idea how it actually is.

SHREK is much more mainstream and visually appealing. Beyond that, I'm sure he's more familiar with the story and characters. The music and cast is amazingly fantastic!!! I think he would enjoy that more. Many of the posters, answering your question, forgot that this is a guy who has never been to Broadway. SHREK will be much more appealing for him. Trust me.

Take everyone else's advice and see Billy Elliot. I think it will end up being a huge success. Although I would start getting tickets NOW, they are going to be going fast. I already have mine for December.

Upcoming Shows: Quilters, A Bronx Tale, August: Osage County, Wicked, Spring Awakening, Little House on the Prairie

Billy Elliot without a doubt ... its an intelligent, emotional show that features some of the best dancing you will see on Broadway, much of it performed by a young boy. It blew me away when I saw it in London, and can't wait to see it again here.

I am staying 2 nights, unfortunately, one of the nights is a Sunday, and both shows are dark! And we wont make it in time into the city for a matinee....He wants to see the sights, I go to NYC all the time, and Broadway is my thing. As I read him these posts he kept hoping someone would support Shrek! Thanks to all for your opinions!
