Brantley -- in one of his odder star-effing moods -- said that though Griffith wasn't much of a singer or dancer, her acting was amazing, that she personified the broken and vulnerable aspects of Roxie Hart more ideally than anyone he'd ever seen play the role other than perhaps Gwen Verdon who created it back in '75. I guess, sort of like Natasha Richardson and some of the actors who played Sally Bowles who weren't great singers, Griffith embodied who the real Roxie Hart would have been -- a pathetic, third-rate vaudeville performer with dreams of stardom. It was a weird review but I can sort of see his point -- while most of us prefer Roxies who can really dance and hit all the notes, Brantley was taken by Griffith's raw vulnerability and found the pathetic nature of her peformance heartbreaking and true to the "real" Roxie.

but really...who did joey play in Little Shop? I got two different answers.
If you say Seymour...WHY? Ugh...no, I bought the revival recording and it's not played by him. I didn't even see his name on the list.

Well, Brantley loved her, but he was definitely in the minority. I'm not sure it was so much her "acting" that he was responding to as much as this pathetic persona she was projecting. For me, I'd prefer someone who could do that who could also sing and dance a little -- it is a musical after all (let her star in a nonmusical version of the show if she so identifies with the role).

i saw melanie first hand in the show. i felt so bad for the other actors (deidre goodwin, brent barret, camielle saviola) for having to work with her. i cannot bring myself to say how awful she was. she was a triple threat: couldnt sing, dance, or act to save her life.

The thing is Chicago was selling out BEFORE Miss Mellie was parachuted in so not sure what she really accomplished, except maybe a PR bump. THE MOVIE is what increased the box office!

How about Susan Egan and Adam Pascal, who have both closed two shows this year?

With Chicago and Mels G, could it have been that people were buying tickets to see the train wreck rather than talent?
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

"How about Susan Egan and Adam Pascal, who have both closed two shows this year?"
I'm kind of confused; what about them?
For both Adam and Susan, one of those two shows was a show they were returning to, so the closing of the show isn't because of them - Adam is reprising his role as Radames, and Susan returned to Cabaret as Sally. She'd played it twice before, I think. Adam also said that he was APPROACHED to close Cabaret. The closing date was already set when he was cast. If you're talking about shows that are closing because of certain casting decisions, the only legitimate possibility there is Susan in Millie, but honestly, I don't think it closed because she's bad. I think it closed because Sutton wasn't there anymore. Just my two cents... and I do have to put in a good word for Adam.

Thank you, Tiny-Toon.
They are, but not in the sense that you're talking about.... but it's better to have that coming from someone who isn't constantly jumping to Adam's defense.

I like Adam, and thought Susan was very good in Cabaret. Just a general statement, really, not a comment on either actor's abilities. But I guess this thread has been engineered to take down actors whom the BroadwayWorld community has deigned to be unpopular.

Not unpopular.. just BAD :)
Adam is a great actor, and he is very far from being BAD

Actually Chicago's boxoffice had fallen way off before Griffith joined the cast (the Weisslers only do their most outrageous casting stunts when the box office picture has gotten bleak). They had been doing barely breakeven business for months, but the week Griffith joined the cast they nearly soldout and continued to sell out for the rest of her run.
