Im going to Broadway for the first time...

Hi all! Im from Canada, but Im making my first trip ever to NYC. I will be there from july 7-15. Im so excited, this has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl. I know this is probably in the wrong section, so forgive me as I havent posted in a while.

Anyways, to my point: A Canadian theatre nut in NYC for the first time, she can see whatever she wants but has no idea where she starts...

What do I see guys?!
xoxo

Lizzie, you are a linking beast on this board! I love it.
"It means nothing to come and sit in a theater night after night and immerse yourself in fantasy, only then to walk out the door and be unchanged in reality. This show will live on in our hearts. But where it truly must survive is in our actions, our compassion and our generousity of spirit towards one another." - Adam Pascal on the closing of RENT

Legally Blonde, Young Frankenstein, or Xanadu are some options of shows to see.

Have a wonderful trip!

re: Im going to Broadway for the first time...

So many to choose from !!!
I'd say, for your first Bway trip, good choices would be

HAIRSPRAY
THE LION KING
WICKED
XANADU
AVENUE Q

and DEFINETELY go and see RENT in May ! It is an incredible show, one you haven't seen and it will be your last chance to see it live on Broadway !

A Chorus Line
Xanadu
In the Heights

re: Im going to Broadway for the first time...

You really should see rent in may, it'll be one of your last chances to see it on broadway. Don't let one actress ruin it for you not to mention she calls out a LOT so you may be lucky and get Caren or Karmine.

Anyway see In The Heights, it's a fabulous show, others i would recommend (depending on what kind of shows you're into are) Avenue Q (if you like satire and grew up watching sesame street), Spring Awakening (if you want a show with great music about the coming of age and all that. Don't be turned away by the hype, the book may be less than perfect but its still a great show and worth seeing at least once), Wicked (if you like a big glitzy show), Legally Blonde (if you want a fun, heartfelt, sugar coated musical that you wont take too seriously but still has a good story behind it), Xanadu (if you're looking for an hour and a half of laid back awesome stupidity), Hairspray (if you havent seen it I really think you should, sure its a little corny w/ the sets and parts of the storyline but it has a great plot and message and incredible music), and Young Frankenstein (if you want a big glitzy show with INCREDIBLE sets and lighting and a Mel Brookes humor)

hope that helped.

re: Im going to Broadway for the first time...

thanks so much you guys

I should mention, Im not going to new york until july, the RENT I would be seeing would be the tour version with the idols, I think its the aussie idol winner and the guy with the dreads...
I might see it just because I love RENT, but Im not sure I want the idol thing hanging over it

I like the idea of spring awakening, Im hoping sweeney is still there when I get there and I am probably going to see wicked just because Ive done songs from it in competition and stuff like that for 3 years.

I have seen the movie version of hairspray and have the original soundtrack.

Id like to see something that I can only see on Broadway, something that hasnt been made into a movie(minus sweeney, because that has been a favorite since I was tiny)

I like the idea of curtains

Keep suggestions coming, Ive been saving up since I was 9 so i have money for multiple shows.
thanks so much

See something old (Phantom, Chicago Lion King) and something new (Heights, Curtains, Poppins) and try and catch a play as well.
