Improv during Popular in Wicked

And I did see it happen the second time I saw Wicked, and I have to admit it was pretty funny, but decidedly not as funny for the first-timers to the show who wonder wtf is going on.

Rath....In a way, yes, she is.
Beaver...I think that makes more sense. But the laughing on stage thing in this situation doesn't make much sense...considering it IS two roomates joking around.

Posted: 11/4/04 at 5:06pmOnce I was playing Gwendolyn in Importance of Being Earnest, and in the scene where I show my diary to Cecily, I burst out laughing at a strategically placed practical joke in the form of an illicit picture (keep in mind my character's supposed to be huffy and pissed), and to make matters worse, I stopped the scene to howl with laughter while my co-star looked on in horror. To make things worse, I turned to the audience, said, "I'm sorry. It's closing night.", and continued to laugh myself stupid for the next 2 minutes. Then during intermission, my director ripped me a new one, and they had to delay the start of Act 2 because I was crying so hard in my dressing room.

Posted: 11/4/04 at 5:08pmI didn't know about Cheno's joking and winking in different parts of the show. Interesting! Thanks for the input guys, really made for some interesting reading while at work!

Posted: 11/4/04 at 5:50pmReferring to Kristen Chenoweth - it's because in almost everything she's ever done on Broadway thus far, she's played the exact same character - Kristen Chenoweth. Everyone's sick of her playing herself onstage - it's really annoying to watch ...CHARLIE BROWN and have the identical quirks, line readings, and personality as Glinda. Don't even try to argue that Sally Brown and Glinda are similar, you'll loose that one.

Posted: 11/4/04 at 5:56pmI mean't NOT similar. Sorry - i'm tired. Get what i mean? She's like nathan lane - everything they do is the same, and eventually, people get sick of it.

Posted: 11/4/04 at 6:23pmIs it really breaking character if the actors stay in character while they are improving? Most the stories I read where Kristin and Idina broke character sounded all like something their characters would have done. Of course, it doesn't matter since it's Wicked and the center of all evil.

Posted: 11/4/04 at 6:28pmNo, it's not breaking character if they ad lib, as long as the *stay in character*. Problem is, they (esp. Cheno) don't do this. Talking to the audience is breaking character. Saying, "It was slow, but it was gooood." when the bed comes out late is breaking character. Giggling when your character has just told Glinda that her father hates her is breaking character. And Cheno's last show was an orgasm of character breaking, but I'll let it go since it was her last show (that's what makes me so nice).

I agree with you about that. But I wonder how many of those stories are exaggerated. I'm not saying they are because I wouldn't know.

Posted: 11/4/04 at 6:46pmAt Kristin's last show, a lot of people in the audience had seen Wicked multiple times and they were there simply to see her last performance. I did not hear any complaints about the adlibs/improvs that occurred during that show. Granted, there were some people in the audience who just happened to buy tickets for that day. But most of the audience members knew exactly what was going on, and were beyond excited about the adlibs. It was Kristin's last show and she wanted to make it special- and she most definitely did.
