"The vast majority of "professional" jobs offer far more antisocial hours than being in theatre. Doctors and policemen can be on call in the middle of the night; high-powered lawyers, bankers, civil servants etc. are expected to work beyond their contractual hours without complaint and well into the small hours on a regular basis. And they have to be at work for 9!"
Policeman and Doctors do work unsocial hours, but they do not have to do this week in - week out, there work is done on a part of a roster, so get plenty of time with their families.
"POL: I'm an educated professional person."
I would not argue with that and I find your contribution on here very interesting and enjoy reading your views.
"who chooses to work unsocial hours in an unsocial job,"
I too have a unsocial job and unsocial hours, that leave me little time to see theatre, however I get plenty of time to see my family.
"And there are PLENTY of skilled workers in other service industries who have far worse terms, conditions and hours to contend with..."
I agree with you on this, take for example the security guards where I work or often have to do 12 hour shifts, 6-7 days on a row. I find those hours to be a abomination and I am the first to agree there compulsory working week should be no more than 40 hours.
My question still stands, what other professional have to work more unsocial hours that personnel employed in theatre?
