In The Heights - farewell to Off-Broadway
In The Heights - farewell to Off-Broadway#1

Just went back to the show this afternoon to see it one last time before it transfers to Broadway. A transfer that I hope will really happen...because today showed a show in tremendous shape that had a typical matinee audience (usually a tough nut to crack) laughing, applauding, and truly enjoying themselves.
And when the second act took it's tragic turn, the audience was in tears all the way through the curtain call.
It was an amazing experience - watching Lin-Manuel work his stuff onstage, with the story he created, was spine-tingling in itself - and I really hope that we can see him and the rest of this fantastic cast again on Broadway.

Posted: 7/15/07 at 1:42amI was there tonight! This was my first time seeing it. It was absolutely fantastic! I had tears running down my face throughout Act II until curtain call. Such an amazing show. I cannot WAIT to see it move to Broadway. This show deserves to be a HIT. A cast *beaming* with talent, a score filled with pulsating rhythms, choreography like no other, and smart, clever humor. Congrats on a great Off-Broadway run! I'll look forward to being at the first preview on Broadway!

Best of luck to the cast and crew. I hope this finds an audience on Broadway. I'm an easy to please theater goer--I can usually find something I like about every show I see--but it's rare that a show leaves me literally breathless. I saw In the Heights in June and was blown away. The music is great, the cast is incredible--the energy was palpable. It's great fun, but it's also very thoughtful and addresses important themes without being didactic or patronizing.

I would imagine, but who knows. The only cast change I would make personally is in the role of Kevin. John Herrera was a complete block of wood, in my opinion, on a stage filled with otherwise spicy players. Cast someone who can evoke at least some sympathy. I couldn't feel a thing for his character through his two ballads. Aside from Herrera, the cast should remain the same, in my opinion. Priscilla Lopez, Mandy Gonzalez, and Karen Olivo played the female roles as very grounded, human and interesting. Olga Merediz, an audience favorite, can expect a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actress, in my opinion. Lin-Manuel, obviously, was fantastic! I hope to see him win AT LEAST one Tony Award next year (Best Score), possibly two (Best Leading Actor). Robin De Jesus was totally hysterical. He had me cracking up. And Christopher Jackson has the voice of a true, smooth pop singer, with the acting chops of a top notch stage performer. And the ensemble was stunning! Lots of eye candy, and all amazing dancers. The standout for me was Javier Munoz, due partially to his suave dancing skills, but much due to his HOT HOT HOT looks. Damn! I cannot wait to see this show hit Broadway.

It's probably going to be awhile before they start previews, since they want Lin-Man to work on the show a bit before Broadway. I'm still guessing spring 2008. So I do hope they are able to keep the cast intact when they re-group.
I do go back and forth on Herrera. I thought the same as Wanna Be when I first saw the show, but in re-visiting it, I think it might be an intentional choice to stick out like a sore thumb and feel cold, so that the audience feels what Camila and Nina see. But I do have to say, his "Useless" gave me chills. (I can imagine it'll be a part of the show they'll work on.)
