Tonight, I had the honor of seeing In The Heights. I had listened to the two songs that they had on their myspace page awhile ago and loved them. Their run at 37 arts became one of those shows that I wanted to see but never got around to it. I was upset when I heard it was closing to go to Broadway because it meant that I never had the chance to see this musical in its first incarnation and I would have to wait close to six months to see it.

The six months have passed and let me tell you it was well worth the wait.

It is hard to pinpoint any one standout performance due to the fact they were all good.

Lin-Manuel Miranda was great as Usnavi. His rapping was well done and he did an amazing job at writing this amazing show.

Caren Olivo was also very good at her performance of Vanessa. Every little choice she made was perfect and she really brought the character to life.

The real standout if I had to pick one was Robin De Jesus as Sonny. His comic timing was perfect.

Priscilla Lopez and Carlos Gomez are such a wonderful onstage couple.

The set really felt like it was an image of a street up in the hights. The dancing was amazing. Having the cast and ensemble all over the space hanging off fire escapes etc really made the work come more alive.

There were lines that were in Spanish. But, it came off in such a way that if you knew spanish that was great. But, if you didn't then that was great too.

I really can't say a bad thing about this show. Every performer was on their A game. It was hard to tell that this was only their second preview.

There was one late light cue that was very obvious. But, really other then that it was hard to tell that it was their second preview.

This is something that I do recommend highly. Go see it and you'll have a great time.

The only regret that I have with this show is that I didn't catch it at 37 arts. That way I could have seen it unfold from what it was there to what it has become at the Richard Rogers Theatre.

I was there on the 15th, too. I wonder if we saw each other??? Haha. Great review. The show was such a good time. The plot line is a little thin. You failed to mention Abuela who did SUCH a great job!! She really makes me have more of an appreciation for the lovely old hispanic woman who runs my local laudromat. Good luck to you, "In the Heights!"
