"In depth" is right! I'm still on page 1 but wanted to thank you in advance as these questions have been wracking my brain ever since seeing this masterpiece.
I mean to be serious, when was the last time you remember hearing an entire audience burst into applause with the very first NOTE of a show? (aside from killer overtures) As soon as that very first grey brush-stroke crosses the white stage, we're there!

Great article. Thanks for posting.
VERY wonderful... just like the show
Thank you for posting.
I can't wiat to see this and suprised I haven't yet..but one complaint! How can the critics atleast 'enjoy' or somewhat 'praise' the projections when two and a half years ago they couldn't get enough of the bashing on projections with the ORIGINAL show with projections -- aka THE WOMAN IN WHITE? Does Broadway hate ALW that much and love Sondheim that much more? Or am I ranting about nothing. But seriously...how can reviews be that drastically different.
The design and execution of the SUNDAY projections is far superior to those that made everyone seasick in WOMAN IN WHITE.
philly-
To answer your question, I think it's simply a matter of quality of work and the degree to which it positively enhances the production. In other words, the projections in "Woman in White", while artistically valid, were simply a method of creating background locations and was probably chosen because physical sets for those places might have been impossible. Whereas the projections used in the "Sunday in the Park with George" revival are used to brilliant effect by adding touches and enhancements that truly add to the visual/artistic charm and emotional impact of the piece.
I'm sure it's not bias towards composers. The reaction, I would think, is based on the quality/purpose/effect of the projections used in respective productions.
Exactly. Woman in White's projections felt perfunctory. Sunday's feel transcendent and add to the power of the experience.
I am a die hard fan of SUNDAY....I fell in love with the original back in the mid 80's.
I will be seeing this on Wednesday night...1/2 way throught my B'way Spring Visit.
I have incredibly HIGH expectations....I hope I won't be setting myself up for a fall!
But, HEY, the link isn't working for me! Help!

Interesting. Didn't really understand it, as I'm technologically handicapped for the most part.

I thought they were having a little bit too much fun with the projections at some points on Broadway- they shouldn't overpower the show but be a part of it. For the most part, though, they adhered to that philosophy. I just thought it was all more understated at the Menier, probably because they had less money and space. (And if they did get more money for Broadway, I wish it some of it had gone into the pit, but what's done is done.)
Re: Woman in White
The projections for this show were BAD! They constantly washed onto the actors and were not believable all.
In Sunday...they are magical.
